Panton town hall cupola.jpg

PANTON — In September 2011, about a dozen Panton residents voted at a special meeting not to spend $70,000 to fix both Town Hall’s roof and the building’s cupola with the cupola in place, opting instead to spend about $32,000 to remove the cupola and fix the roof.

Since then, the cupola has been sitting on blocks behind and to the left of Town Hall, waiting while Panton officials have understandably dedicated limited town funds to more pressing needs.

One analogy for the Republican Party’s response to the release of Donald Trump’s taped 2005 remarks detailing his intent to commit adultery via crude sexual assault comes from the world of sports — the NFL, to be exact.

BRISTOL — Visiting Colchester dealt the Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team a disappointing 1-0 setback on Tuesday afternoon.

The 5-4-1 Eagles had defeated the 4-4-2 Lakers by 3-1 in Colchester earlier this season, but this time the Lakers earned a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal in avenging that setback.

Eagle sophomore goalie Chessley Jackman played well in the loss, making nine saves and also kicking the ball out of harm’s way a number of times. Laker goalie Abby Ladd stopped four shots in the shutout.

BRISTOL — It’s not that often that a team outshot by 14-0 in a first half pulls out a victory.

But that is what the resilient Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer squad did at rival Mount Abraham on Friday, scoring twice in the second half on a penalty kick by junior Ben Kayhart and a direct kick by senior Max Ratti-Bicknell to stun the Eagles, 2-1.

Even in the second half, Mount Abe (2-6-1) held advantages over the Commodores in shots, 7-6, and corner kicks, 6-0, but could not put away VUHS.

The Eagles outshot VUHS, 28-9 (10-1 in the first half and 4-0 in overtime), but the Commodores created chances, especially late in the game.

Ultimately, Coach Dustin Corrigan’s decision to move junior Lydia Pitts from defense to striker in overtime proved to be the difference.

VERGENNES — St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes will soon be getting a direct connection to the heavens — through 87 solar panels that Bristol Electronics will start installing on the south-facing roof of St. Peter’s Parish Hall this month.

After The Rev. Yvon Royer, who serves both St. Peter’s and the St. Ambrose Parish in Bristol, learned that Rutland’s St. Peter’s Parish earlier this year had such an array installed, in early August he proposed the idea for the rooftop array to the Vergennes Parish.
