Funds sought for crosswalk lighting in Vergennes

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council last week voted to seek a Vermont Agency of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Program grant to help fund five sets of flashing pedestrian lights at heavily used crosswalks, mostly on Main Street.

The lights cost $11,000 a pair, and City Manager Mel Hawley said required site work, such as metal roadside pedestrian grates, will add to the final cost of installation.

Ferrisburgh nears approval of municipal town plan

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard last week at its second public hearing on a proposed new town plan heard debate on what is apparently the final issue holding up its adoption — a proposed mapping change that would move a couple of properties along Route 7 from a Highway Commercial District to a less permissive Conservation zone.

Otter pitcher leads Addy Indy all-star baseball team

ADDISON COUNTY — Given this spring’s wet weather maybe we should all have expected it to be the season of the Otter, and the baseball season turned out that way: The Otter Valley Union High School nine bounced back from a combined total of four wins in the past two springs to claim the Division II title.

City manager talks about his (eventual) retirement

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley could step down as soon as August 2018, it was made public in Tuesday’s Vergennes City Council meeting.

Hawley has said openly in the past year or so that his second term as Vergennes city manager could be nearing a close, but rarely in detail in such a public forum.

AC Legion baseball seeking to hit stride

MIDDLEBURY — Four recent home games at the Middlebury College baseball diamond left the Addison County American Legion baseball team still searching for its first win of the summer at 0-6.

On Sunday, AC dropped a tight contest to Montpelier, 4-2. On Saturday, visiting S.D. Ireland swept a doubleheader from AD, 15-4 in six innings and 6-2, and on Thursday Colchester scored five times in the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie and win, 6-1.

City council cites 'thin cushion,' adds 2 cents

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Tuesday added two cents to the tax rate needed to support city services and adopted a $2,290,291 municipal budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1; the budget will increase city spending by about $58,000.

Area stars helped Vt. take on rival N.H. in Twin-State games

NEW HAMPSHIRE — A number of recently graduated high school athletes played for Vermont teams vs. their New Hampshire counterparts in Twin-State All-Star Games this past weekend, but were unable to help their Green Mountain teams pull off victories in games played in the Granite State.

On Friday night at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, the New Hampshire field hockey team defeated Vermont, 4-1, in a game local coaches said was more competitive than the final score.

Ferrisburgh will seek to settle tree-cutting case

FERRISBURGH — After a June 20 closed-door meeting with the Ferrisburgh selectboard, town attorney Jim Carroll told about 20 residents that he would be working to reach a settlement with the Vorsteveld Farm for cutting down about 1,900 trees and shrubs in the town right of way this spring along a three-quarter-mile stretch of Arnold Bay Road.

But Carroll added that a court case remains possible based on the statute that requires landowners to obtain permission before cutting trees in town rights of way.

Tiger senior tops Independent softball all-star squad

ADDISON COUNTY — The Mount Abraham Union High School softball team made history this spring, and is deservedly well represented on the 2017 Addison Independent Softball All-Star Team.

But the top nod goes to a Middlebury player. Senior Payton Buxton excelled on the mound, at the plate and in the field and deserved her third straight selection as the Addison Independent Softball Player of the Year.

City couple Mona and Jon Sullivan has been operating their online local-food business, Provisionary, out of a 400-square-foot space at 7 South Maple St., just off Main Street.
