VERGENNES — About a year ago the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes was putting the finishing touches on a roughly $100,000 renovation of its School Street headquarters and had just hired longtime local afterschool program head Jill Strube as its new executive director.

It hoped to attract more young members who otherwise might have nothing better to do after school.

As the 2016-2017 school year began daily club attendance ran between 15 and 18 5th-through-12-graders, and the club’s total membership stood at 75.

BRANDON — Although Coach Stacey Edmunds-Brickell said her Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team did not play its best on Saturday, the Otters rallied late for a 3-3 tie against visiting Windsor, at 8-3-1 Division III’s top team.

The 9-2-2 Otters will enter the D-I playoffs as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Mount Abraham (4-6-4) this weekend.

Edmunds-Brickell said she expects the Otters — who earlier dealt Windsor two of its three losses — to compete well in the postseason.

BRISTOL — Constant pressure finally paid off for the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday against visiting Middlebury: The last of their roughly 30 shots, launched by senior striker Abby Mansfield with 3:58 to go, nestled inside the left post to give the Eagles a 1-0 win despite a strong defensive effort by the shorthanded Tigers.
