ESSEX — The Middlebury Union High School football team appears to have saved its best for last.

A week after the Tigers upset second-place Champlain Valley to earn the No. 5 seed for the Division I playoffs, they dominated No. 4 Essex this past Friday for most of a quarterfinal matchup and avenged a 17-0 loss on the same field three weeks before with a 17-14 victory.

VERGENNES — The City of Vergennes’ annual spending, which runs from July to June in the city’s fiscal year, appears to be on track at a point, in late October, where tracking the budget begins to mean something.

“It actually starts to take shape,” City Manager Mel Hawley told the city council at a meeting this past Tuesday.

The recent arrival of the city’s two new police cruisers should clean up the only line item that has proven problematic.

ADDISON COUNTY — While most election-season signs dotting county roadsides support candidates for statewide races and local Vermont House and Senate seats, an unusual number have also sprouted up backing two men seeking an unpaid county-wide job in which the officeholder rarely, if ever, does anything: high bailiff.

Two-term incumbent Charles Clark Jr., a Republican who is also the Addison County Sheriff Department’s chief deputy, is facing a challenge from former longtime county deputy and private sector security employee Ron Holmes, a Democrat.
