ADDISON COUNTY — As of early Tuesday morning 5,300 Green Mountain Power customers in Addison County remained without electricity following the house-shaking, tree-felling windstorm late Sunday and early on Monday. GMP spokespersons said the high winds caused more outages across Vermont than any in the company’s history.

VERGENNES — At the Oct. 24 meeting of the Vergennes City Council, board members took a concrete action that should prove popular: They approved $3,880 in repairs to the city pool.

Many residents in the past two years have urged the council to pay more attention to the pool, calling it probably the city’s most valuable recreation asset.

On this past Tuesday, the council unanimously backed City Manager Mel Hawley’s recommendation to spend $3,880 to caulk the joints around the edge of the pool and all the joints in the decking around the pool.

City continues to look at local option tax

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes City Council at their Oct. 24 meeting continued their preliminary discussion of local option taxes, which piggyback on state sales-and-use or rooms-and-meals taxes by adding 1 percent for local revenue to either or both.

Before a Vermont municipality can put such taxes in place a charter change is required that must be approved first by voters and then by the Legislature.

Funds sought for Vergennes sewer study

VERGENNES — Vergennes could get some financial help in studying how to upgrade its Macdonough Drive pump station, City Manager Mel Hawley told the Vergennes City Council on Oct. 24.

Despite a few recent upgrades, that station has still overflowed untreated wastewater close to a dozen times in the past two years, almost always after heavy rains cause stormwater infiltration into the city’s aging sewer collection system.

BRANDON — Neither rain nor wind nor mud nor the No. 3 seed Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team could slow visiting No. 6 Mount Abraham on Thursday, when the Eagles scored early and used dominating defense all over the field to defeat the Otters, 1-0, in a Division II quarterfinal.

Mount Abe improved to 5-6-4 — and 5-0-1 against D-II competition — after surviving another fall in the almost exclusively D-I Metro Conference.
