MIDDLEBURY — The Ferrisburgh resident who was driving under the influence of alcohol on June 17 when her car struck and killed a Charlotte physician bicycling on Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh was on Monday sentenced to a year’s probation and 80 days of community service in the Addison County Superior Court.

Judge Samuel Hoar handed down that sentence, to which was also attached a lengthy list of conditions that included drug and alcohol screening and substance abuse treatment, after Holly Gonyeau, 36, changed her plea from innocent to no contest.

VERGENNES — Addison Superior Court Judge Samuel Hoar Jr. on Nov. 2 dismissed a civil lawsuit filed against Vergennes by an East Street resident that was related to the city’s failed attempt to build a preschool playground near the city’s East Street swimming pool.

That quarter-acre project, originally estimated at $42,000, was to be funded by a $21,000 grant and by another $21,000 from the city’s Water Tower Fund. City officials walked away from the playground proposal when the cost escalated after a year of delays.

VERGENNES — After one final debate on downtown housing regulations, this past Tuesday night, the Vergennes City Council adopted new zoning laws as proposed by the city’s planning commission.

The section in question as approved on Nov. 10 will allow property owners in the Central Business District to install first-floor or basement apartments, but only if the units do not front on streets, cannot be seen from streets, and do not take up more than 20 percent of a building’s footprint.

FERRISBURGH — Representatives of the companies proposing a $600 million underground power line that would run through Ferrisburgh told about 20 residents and officials on Thursday they were prepared to pay the town at least $350,000 a year for 20 years on top of an estimated $150,000 a year in local taxes the project would generate.

According to a document displayed at the evening meeting in the town office building’s community center, the companies would also “escalate that payment by a mutually agreed index.”

ADDISON COUNTY — The return of the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team to Division II prominence was the biggest local story in the sport, and unsurprisingly the Eagles are well represented on the 2015 Addison Independent Boys’ Soccer All-Star Team, led by Player of the Year Charlie Meyer.

Meyer’s all-around efforts and scoring helped Coach Mike Corey’s Mount Abe group improve from four victories in 2014 to 10 wins this fall, and four more Eagles join him as Independent all-stars.
