VERGENNES — Vergennes residents will have a chance to weigh in on a proposed update to the city’s zoning laws at a Monday, Sept. 28, public hearing to be hosted by the Vergennes Planning Commission.

Planners hope after that hearing to pass their proposal to the city council, which would also have to hold at least one hearing before it adopted the update. An eight-page overview of the changes may be found at vergennes.org under “City News.”

MIDDLEBURY — The new-look Middlebury College field hockey team got off to a 2-0 start with wins on Sunday and Monday, and Coach Katharine DeLorenzo saw signs the Panthers could answer their biggest question entering the 2015 season.

Middlebury — ranked No. 4 in the early NCAA Division III poll — returns its entire starting defense and seven of its top 10 scorers, but graduated most of its starting midfield, including two all-Americans, from the team that won the NESCAC tournament for the third straight time and reached the NCAA semifinal round.

Wasps tie Tiger girls' soccer late in the game

MIDDLEBURY — Victory slipped away from the Middlebury Union High School girls’ soccer team’s grasp with just seconds to go in regulation Friday afternoon. Although disappointing for the Tigers, the 1-1 tie with visiting Woodstock probably was a fair result.

The 1-2-1 Tigers linked up well at midfield, battled hard for 50-50 balls, and defended strongly, while the 2-0-1 Wasps earned the edge in shots at goal (23-9) and offensive chances.

BURLINGTON — On Saturday evening in Burlington a film made by a former Middlebury resident will make its Vermont premiere, a documentary that, in part, highlights Middlebury’s pivotal role in making same-sex marriage the law of the land.

“The State of Marriage,” written and directed by former Vermont radio journalist Jeffrey Kaufman, brings to life the story of how Middlebury lawyers Beth Robinson and Susan Murray worked with Massachusetts attorney Mary Bonauto to develop a strategy that, according to Kaufman, succeeded on a nationwide basis.

BRANDON — On the first play from scrimmage in Saturday’s Division III football game vs. visiting BFA-Fairfax, Otter Valley Union High School quarterback Carson Leary bobbled a snap that was a little off target, and the Otters lost six yards.

That was about all that went wrong for OV in what was a rematch of the 2014 state championship game, won by the Bullets.

FERRISBURGH — Neighbors of an almost completed Ferrisburgh manure pit are upset about its potential impact on their quality of life and about the pit approval process, and they have protested to the Agency of Agriculture, the Ferrisburgh selectboard and their elected state representatives.

The farmer and state officials say the pit not only follows all regulations, but it is environmentally sound and sited as far from neighbors as is practical.
