More input in civic affairs sought for city youth

VERGENNES — A Vergennes resident has asked city council members if they would consider ways to better involve the city’s young adults and students in civic affairs, and council members at their Feb. 14 meeting took seriously the suggestion.

Erin Roche — also the wife of Alderman Mark Koenig — said she had one short-term suggestion and also hoped the council would work to find longer-term solutions about how to create opportunities for younger citizens “to become more engaged in the political process and the work of the community.”

Ferrisburgh makes final plans for town charter

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard plans to review its proposed town charter with voters at Ferrisburgh’s annual town meeting, and the board will also recommend to residents that hearing and vote dates on the charter be set for as soon in the spring as possible, according to Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence.

If residents agree, that could mean a charter adoption vote in early May, and the two town public hearings required by state law before the vote could be held in early and late April, with town-wide balloting to follow in early May.

Ferrisburgh, VTrans explore future of Stage Road-Rt. 7 intersection

NORTH FERRISBURGH — At their Feb. 21 meeting, members of the Ferrisburgh selectboard reviewed the latest response from the Agency of Transportation to the board’s request for a study of the Route 7-Stage Road intersection that could lead to its signalization.

Residents have petitioned the board to lobby VTrans for a light, and the board had even before gone back and forth with agency officials on the issue.

Tiger girls' hockey nails down second seed

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ team defeated two of its three main rivals for the Division I title last week as the regular season ended to finish at 15-4-1 and earn the No. 2 seed.

On Wednesday the Tigers knocked off first-place Essex, 3-1, and on Saturday the Tigers went to St. Albans and halted fourth-place BFA-St. Albans’ eight-game winning streak, also by 3-1.

MUHS boys' basketball team wins tight battle with VUHS

MIDDLEBURY —  On Friday at Middlebury Union High School saw two boys’ basketball teams, the host Tigers and visiting Vergennes, with a combined seven wins battled hard to finish their regular seasons on a high note.

And battle they did. Both rallied from deficits, and the fourth quarter saw five lead changes and six ties before the Tigers eked out a 73-70 win to finish at 5-15.

Three locals win state wrestling titles

VERGENNES — Three local wrestlers who won state titles at this weekend’s Vermont high school championship wrestling meet at Vergennes Union High School.

Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Roman Mayer claimed the 120-pound title, Brandon Cousino of the host Commodores prevailed at 182, and Otter Valley’s Tyson Cram earned the 145-pound crown.

Middlebury Union High School’s Dustin Davio finished second at 138.

In team scoring, Mount Abraham earned the best team finish among the local schools by taking fifth.

Middlebury boys' hockey squad hits post-season with wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey last week finished strong in its first winter back in Division I, winning twice to finish at 11-7-2.

That record is the best among the four D-II teams that moved up to D-I this past offseason and will apparently earn the Tigers the No. 6 seed.

In boys' high school hoop: Eagles fall to Slaters; OV falls on the road

ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school boys’ basketball late last week as the regular season concluded, Mount Abraham dropped a pair of games, one to Fair Haven, while Otter Valley lost on the road to finish at .500.

The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to release official playoff pairings on Monday morning.

Vergennes to host a drug treatment center: Valley Vista finally set for Alden Place

ANWSD to hold Monday budget forum

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest School District board members and administrators will discuss their roughly $21.1 million unified budget proposal for the 2017-2018 academic year at the board’s annual meeting next Monday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. in the Vergennes Union High School library.

On Town Meeting Day voters in Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham will vote for the first time on a unified ANSWD budget to cover operations for all four ANWSD schools and their central office, and the district’s share of Hannaford Career Center costs.
