The victory on the new field made the day more meaningful, said junior OV quarterback Zakk Williams, who completed five of six attempts for four touchdowns and 115 yards.

MIDDLEBURY — A veteran Middlebury Union High School field hockey team blanked less-experienced visiting Mount Abraham on Wednesday, 3-0, in a season opener that showed promise for both the Tigers and Eagles.

The Tigers, a team that returns 11 athletes who played key roles in last season’s 11-win squad, showed they might contend in Division I again. Their offense earned advantages in shots (13-7) and penalty corners (6-3), while their defense, which allowed only one preseason goal, posted another shutout.

This school year will see almost all Middlebury Union High School sports competing at the Division II level, with the exceptions being field hockey and both lacrosse teams.

Other Tiger athletic programs are already in D-II, including basketball, soccer and boys’ cross-country. Still other girls’ programs are now technically in D-I, but are in the process of being moved to D-II, according to MUHS activities director Sean Farrell. Because the numbers are within appeal guidelines, Farrell expects the Vermont Principals’ Association to OK the changes.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh Central School Principal JoAnn Taft-Blakely on Thursday said school maintenance men Wayne Barrows and Gerry Blair would be two of the town’s most important employees this week.
