FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Jan. 16 met for an hour behind closed doors with town attorney James Carroll and tree warden Cliff Mix to discuss what one board member called “the Vorsteveld tree-cutting issue,” but took no official action.

But Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence this week acknowledged the board asked Carroll to set up a meeting with the members of the Vorsteveld family who own the farm along Arnold Bay Road — and this past spring paid to have the east side of its 0.75 mile in Ferrisburgh clear-cut.

ADDISON — A long-planned exchange of small parcels of town- and school-owned land near Addison Central School and the now-vacant, 150-year-old former Addison Town Hall can move forward after the Addison Northwest School District board on Jan. 17 signed off on deeds.

The town still needs to secure land and build a septic system for the old town hall before the land swap can be completed.

Bursting Vergennes Union High School pipes shut gym, flood halls

VERGENNES — Flooding due to frozen pipes in the Vergennes Union High School sprinkler system has twice struck the building, most recently on Monday in the main VUHS hallway — but more seriously back on Jan. 2, when water damage to the school’s main gymnasium floor will put the gym mostly out of service for the next six weeks.

On Monday, a sprinkler pipe froze and then burst over the VUHS health office, just off the main hallway connecting the school’s two wings, at about 5:30 p.m.

After weird weather, city sewage over ow among state’s largest

Posted on January 18, 2018 |

VERGENNES — Weather extremes late last week — heavy rains, warm temperatures that melted existing snow, and then a hard freeze — triggered overflows to municipal sewer systems around Vermont, notably in Vergennes, St. Albans and Rutland.

All plant operators are required to report combined sewer system overflows to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). That’s because the overflows are mostly storm water after weather events such as those last week, but also contain septic waste.

Addison Northwest warns budget with lower spending, higher taxes

Posted on January 15, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District Board on Wednesday agreed to propose a district-wide spending plan of $21,106,261 that if approved by voters on Town Meeting Day would cut current spending by about $10,000.

Because of a projected statewide school tax rate increase of 9.4 cents that budget would still increase the ANWSD property tax rate by 8.33 cents, according to preliminary district estimates provided to the board. Those estimates still hinge on factors that will be determined outside the district.
