VERGENNES — The Vergennes Farmers Market is making plans to move this spring from its longtime home on the city green to the Kennedy Brothers building parking lot further north on Main Street, according to new volunteer managers Christopher and Sandy Reck.

The Recks — who sell pies at the market — met with the Vergennes City Council on Tuesday to discuss any city permissions that might be needed and to explain their decision.

VERGENNES — At their Tuesday meeting, Vergennes city council members heard a pitch from Bixby Library board President Paula Moore for $8,000 of increased support, but deferred a decision.

The council also decided to keep level the rates for using the city pool, while at the same time dipping deeper into the city’s Watershed Fund to cover a projected operating deficit.

Moore told the board the Bixby represents “a phenomenal value” to the five communities it serves.

BRANDON — In a duel between two Division II baseball teams off to good starts, visiting Mount Abraham took advantage of early Otter Valley miscues to take the lead and then broke the game open with some timely hitting to win, 10-5.

The result moved the Eagles, the defending D-II champions, to 3-0 — a better start than in 2016, when the team gelled only after opening 0-6.

MIDDLEBURY — Friday’s high school girls’ lacrosse game pitted host Middlebury, a 6-0 team that reached the Division I final a year ago and has championship hopes this spring, against 0-4 Burlington, which won the title in 2015 but is now in full rebuilding mode.

It showed.

The Tigers scored twice in the first 1:08 and three times in the first 4:41, controlled 14 of 18 draws, and used their speed and hustle to earn a 56-15 edge in ground balls as they coasted to a 15-1 victory.

Andy Kirkaldy: Stats can help both athletes and observers

On Saturday I watched my younger daughter’s college lacrosse game. At one point she burst through a knot of four or five players battling for a ground ball (lax-speak for a loose ball) and tried to scoop it. Her first try to pick the ball up knocked it clear of the scrum.

But she was able to snag the ball cleanly on a second try, and then reverse field and sprint down the right sideline, back toward the opposing goal. Two opponents tried to pin her along the sideline, but she stopped, switched to her left hand, and tossed the ball to a teammate.

RUTLAND — When Rutland’s Ben Davine scored back-to-back goals late in Friday’s third period against the visiting Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team, the Raiders had taken the lead for the first time, 8-7.

The Tigers led by as many as three, 6-3, at 4:44 of the second period, but Rutland seized the momentum with a 5-1 run over the next 13 minutes, thanks in part to Tiger turnovers.
