MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team took an early lead against visiting Vergennes on Monday and then held off Commodore rallies to earn a 43-29 victory and a season sweep of their local rivals.

The Commodores fell behind by 12-3 late in the first quarter, but cut the lead to two in the second quarter. Then, after falling behind by 11 points in both the third and fourth quarters, VUHS sliced the lead to six in the third and then five in the fourth.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team went a long way toward earning a home Division II quarterfinal game on Tuesday, when the fourth-place Tigers dominated visiting fifth-place Milton, 4-0.

MUHS is 12-4-2 with two games left in the regular season, vs. Harwood (8-8 as of Tuesday) at home on Saturday and at Mount Mansfield (8-9) next Wednesday. The Tigers will be trying to stretch a six-game unbeaten string (5-0-1) in those contests.

Estimates call for lower school taxes in most ANwSU towns

VERGENNES — Residential school tax rates are now expected to drop in four out of five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union communities, according to new estimates released this week by ANwSU officials.

They revised their estimates — which are lower than those published in ANwSU annual town reports — after the Legislature agreed late in January to make changes to school-funding provisions in Act 46, Vermont’s new education law that also promotes school consolidation.

VERGENNES — Eleven-year-old Addison resident Louis Provencher spent plenty of time this past weekend playing his favorite video games, including “Clash of the Clans.”

It was a little more fun than usual because he could load the games on his brand-new computer tablet, which he got on Friday from Google. That’s right, representatives from the Internet behemoth on Friday morning surprised Provencher in a school-wide assembly at the Champlain Valley Christian School in Vergennes.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team picked up two hard-fought NESCAC home wins this weekend to move to 14-8 — and more importantly 6-2 in the league, a record that gives them a chance to earn first place next weekend.

The Panthers’ victories — 67-65 vs. Colby on Saturday and 78-69 vs. Bowdoin on Sunday — mean that if they win at Amherst and Trinity this coming Friday and Saturday, respectively, they will earn the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC tournament.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard has ended two months of debate at board meetings and around town by voting to contract with the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, not the Vergennes Police Department, for part-time law enforcement services in the upcoming fiscal year.

Eagles put it together against Milton basketball

Eagle basketball.jpg

BRISTOL — It probably wouldn’t be fair to call Tuesday’s visit from Milton a must-win game for the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team.

But with the regular season winding down, it was close to one. The Eagles have been playing better after a brutal early schedule, but entering the game with a 4-10 mark that includes three recent losses to Division I teams, it was important to show they could defeat a competent, but not great, 6-7 D-II Yellowjacket team.

VERGENNES — Members of the Vergennes City Council meeting, at their Jan. 26 meeting, deemed untimely a petition submitted by former Alderwoman Clara “Ziggy” Comeau and declined to place an article she requested on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

Petitioned articles had a Jan. 14 deadline, earlier than the Jan. 25 deadline for submitting paperwork for those wishing to run for elective office. Comeau presented her petition on Jan. 21, Hawley said, saying she had been confused about the dates.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Vergennes, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley union high school wrestlers fared well at a Saturday tournament hosted by Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, led by two Commodores who won their weight classes, senior Ethan Reardon and junior Brandon Cousino.

Reardon won twice by pin and then twice by convincing decisions, including by 8-2 over Taconic’s Zabion Powell in the 132-pound final to earn what was his first-ever tournament title.
