Swimmers warming up to Middlebury pool: Town repairs are now making a difference

MIDDLEBURY — It’s one thing to persuade members of a summer swim team between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend 8 a.m. practices every weekday.

It’s another if the water in the pool barely reaches 70 degrees on a sunny morning, never mind if it’s rainy and cool.

Malt maker, Ferrisburgh strike deal for prime land

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday agreed on a $337,500 deal to sell the town-owned 34.91-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A to Andrew Peterson of Monkton, owner of Peterson Quality Malt.

Peterson plans to build a 10,000-square-foot, barn-like malt-processing house and to grow barley on the land. He said he is optimistic the deal can eventually close despite the hurdles that remain, such as permitting and financing contingencies that are due to be met in January and November, respectively.

FERRISBURGH — With Ferrisburgh zoning administrator Ken Wheeling out on a leave of absence, the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday voted to advertise for what Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence on Wednesday described as an “alternate assistant zoning administrator.”

When asked, Lawrence confirmed that alternate assistant would in all likelihood remain on the job on some basis even when and if Wheeling, 78, returns from his second leave of absence in 18 months.

Legion baseball tops Essex to cap season

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion team finished what was an overall disappointing season in style on Friday at the Middlebury College field, knocking visiting Essex out of the playoffs with a 6-2 victory.

Essex needed to win a game that was a makeup of an earlier rainout to finish fourth and earn the final Northern Division playoff berth, but the pitching of AC ace Adam Whitcomb and a five-run AC fifth inning denied the perennial Legion powerhouse the chance to advance.
