At the end of every year, the Addy Indy staff sits down in the newsroom and works out our picks for the top 10 stories of the year. Some choices are clear-cut, and other times it requires scanning back through a year's worth of front pages, trying to decide which stories had the largest effect on the county.

Vermont Land Trust keeps 1,241 acres of county land open in 2011

ADDISON COUNTY — By the end of this year, there will be 7,747 more acres of land in Vermont that will never be developed.

That’s the total acreage of new Vermont Land Trust conservation easement projects across the state, which includes 1,241 in Addison County. Among those who sold land were Harvey and Donna Smith, who run a diversified beef farm in New Haven, and siblings Karlene, Nancy and Randy DeVine, who sold land they’d inherited to neighboring farmers Jim and Jane Danyow in Ferrisburgh.

Middlebury grad wins survivor

MIDDLEBURY — Some Middlebury College graduates go on to gain acclaim in science, medicine and politics. On Sunday, one recent graduate stormed to fame on longtime CBS reality TV show “Survivor.”

Sophie Clarke of Willsboro, N.Y., graduated from the college in May and is currently enrolled at the Mount Sinai College of Medicine in New York City. On Sunday, when the final episode of  “Survivor: South Pacific” aired, Clarke beat out the two other finalists and claimed the $1 million prize.

Clippings: Internet freedom tops holiday wish list

This year, all I want for Christmas is an open Internet. I’m looking at you, Congress.

Normally I’d just ask for an iPad. It’s not like I haven’t been drooling over that page on the Apple website for quite a while. Or maybe a new smartphone, since I may or may not have dropped mine on the treadmill earlier this week and done irreparable damage. Or, hey, maybe a new camera. Mine’s going on seven years old, and it’s getting harder to take photos or videos that anyone wants to see.

Holiday turkey traditions hold strong for Vt. farmers

ADDISON COUNTY — Despite the ever more chaotic rush for all things new and discounted during the holiday season, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed in years: the Thanksgiving turkey dinner.

Tradition held true this year, according to Addison County’s largest turkey producers, Misty Knoll Farm in New Haven and Stonewood Farm in Orwell. They say a sluggish economy hasn’t stifled the demand for Vermont-produced turkeys.

College's endowment rebounds

MIDDLEBURY — After a turbulent couple of years, it looks like Middlebury College is out of the woods financially.

That’s according to Patrick Norton, vice president and treasurer at the college. Norton said that although the school’s endowment has rebounded to $825 million from its low point in March 2009, the financial crisis has changed the way the institution handles its money.

The annual Very Merry Middlebury event on December 3 brought children and their parents to town to meet Santa at the Middlebury Community House, take a horse-drawn wagon ride with Pat and Cathy Palmer, and grab a cup of hot chocolate at the warming hut.

Students aim to aid the lake

MIDDLEBURY — Students in the Environmental Studies senior seminar at Middlebury College aren’t just completing graduation requirements, they’re doing research that will actually be used by government agencies, local officials, scientists and consultants.

The 11 seniors and the officials with whom they worked hope the work they did will improve the health of Lake Champlain and make local neighborhoods healthier places to live.
