Local auditions for 'Picasso at the Lapin Agile' play are Nov. 6, 8

It is 1904, in Paris, France. The Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), quaint watering hole to struggling artists and would-be geniuses, welcomes two soon-to-be legends for one extraordinary night. Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, whose egos match their intellects, spar with the regulars and each other about art, science, inspiration, love and the promise of the 20th century. Throw in a mysterious visitor who makes the ladies swoon, and you’re in for a well-rounded theater experience.

Town Hall Theater brings the five star production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” to the screen on Thursday, Nov. 9.  In the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, Martha, much to her husband George’s displeasure, has invited the new professor and his wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.

Panther men reach soccer semifinal

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The No. 5 seed Middlebury College men’s soccer team advanced to this weekend’s NESCAC final four by upsetting No. 4 Connecticut on Saturday, 1-0 in overtime.

The 11-5 Panthers will take on No. 3 Bowdoin at Tufts at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, after the top-seeded Jumbos meet No. 7 Hamilton at 11 a.m. The winners will meet on Sunday at noon for the NESCAC title and the league’s automatic NCAA Division III berth.

Panther football falls to Trinity

MIDDLEBURY — In a battle for first place in NESCAC on Saturday visiting Trinity got help from four Panther turnovers on the way to a 27-5 victory.

Trinity, which intercepted two passes and recovered two Panther fumbles, improved to 7-0 with its 16th straight win, while the Panthers  — who were playing without starting quarterback Jared Lebowitz, injured vs. Bates a week before — dropped to 5-2.

The Panthers will look to bounce back this coming Saturday, when they host Hamilton at 12:30 p.m.

Vermont State Police Log: Residents warned to be on guard for 'mystery shopper' mail scam

ADDISON COUNTY — Recently the Vermont State Police at the New Haven barracks were made aware of a “mystery shopper” or “secret shopper” mail scam. In these particular cases, individuals received a letter stating that they had been approved to be a mystery shopper and that the accompanying check was for their first assignment. The letter asks that the individual deposit the check at their bank and withdraw the cash.

Local high school athletes chosen for All Star Football Game

MIDDLEBURY — Senior athletes from the Middlebury, Mount Abraham-Vergennes, and Otter Valley union high schools’ football teams have been chosen to play in the 17th annual North-South Senior All-Star Football Game, which will be played on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Middlebury College.

Five members of the MUHS team were chosen for the South team: linemen Jack Deppman, Brian Foote and Jaro Perera; fullback/nose guard Tyler Hotte; and safety/quarterback Cody Pomainville.

Bristol Police Log: Man cited for DUI, second offense

BRISTOL — On Oct. 21 Bristol police arrested 38-year-old Jeremy Charles Denton of White Water, Wis., and cited him for driving under the influence, second offense.

Officers were notified of a vehicle traveling southbound on Monkton Road toward Bristol after another motorist observed erratic operation. Police stopped the vehicle on Cove Road in Bristol and noted signs of impairment.

The driver, identified as Denton, submitted to field sobriety exercises and was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
