Orchestra to perform 'Storytellers' at Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — Under the baton of guest conductor, Dr. Yutaka Kono, the Champlain Philharmonic will present its Spring Concert Series titled “Storytellers,” Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. The concert will also be performed on May 8, at 4 p.m. at Green Mountain College in Poultney.

Kono is the artistic director of the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, conductor of the Vermont Youth Philharmonia of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association, and orchestra director and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Vermont.

MUHS softball's win over VUHS is part of a three-game sweep

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury highlighted area high school softball action in the latter half of last week by sweeping three games, including a victory over rival Vergennes.

In other action, Mount Abraham won two out of three, and the Commodores and Otter Valley each split a pair of games.

TIGERS TAKE THREE

On Thursday, MUHS hurler Payton Buxton struck out 12 and allowed only three hits as the Tigers earned a 7-2 victory over visiting VUHS.

Wins put MUHS girls' lax at the top of the standings

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team took over first place in Division I with a pair of wins in the latter half of last week. At 5-0, the Tigers are the last unbeaten team in D-I, but have played four of five games at home and will face challenges from Essex, South Burlington and Mount Mansfield in their next three games.

In boys' tennis, Tigers make it look easy

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ tennis team coasted to three wins late last week and improved to 4-0.

On Thursday, the Tigers defeated visiting Harwood, 6-1. In individual matches:

•  At No. 1 singles, Nick Holmes (M) defeated Colin Tennelly (H), 6-2, 7-5.

•  At No. 2 singles, Jon Fitzcharles (M) defeated Bergan Allison (H), 6-4, 7-6.

•  At No. 3 singles, Payton Randolph (H) defeated Owen Hammel (M), 6-3, 6-3.

Eagles, Tigers and Commodores each win one boys' lax game

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham made it a season sweep of Otter Valley to highlight high school boys’ lacrosse action in the latter half of last week. Both the Eagles and Otters dropped other games, while Vergennes won its only outing and Middlebury split two contests.

MUHS Scholars' Bowl team fifth at nationals

CHICAGO — The Scholars’ Bowl team from Middlebury Union High School posted a 10-4 overall record at the NAQT Small-School National Tournament in Chicago this weekend and tied for fifth out of 80 teams. Kevin Commo of the Vermont- NEA Scholars’ Bowl said this was a state record for wins at a national tournament. The team won three straight do-or-die playoff games.

AMANDA WARREN, A mentor-teacher on the Bridge School Inc. leadership team in Middlebury, last month competed in the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. The 26-year-old Middlebury resident trained for months to tackle and successfully complete this iconic marathon during school break in April. As well as training and competing as a runner, Warren worked hard to raise $12,891 for Boston Children’s Hospital. She can accept donations through May 18 through an online site at http://fundraise.childrenshospital.org/goto/amandawarren.

Maple Run expected to draw a crowd; some roads closed Sunday

Approximately 800 runners, many traveling with family and friends, are expected in Middlebury this weekend for the eighth edition of the Middlebury Maple Run – The Sweetest Half. The 13.1-mile half-marathon running race starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, in the parking lot behind Porter Hospital.

Event organizers added a new feature or two to the event every year. New this year:

• The oldest male and female finishers will receive a bottle of WhistlePig rye whiskey (bottled in Shoreham) for their efforts.

See Jupiter at observatory open house on Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The Physics Department at Middlebury College will again host two open house nights at the College Observatory this spring. The observatory, located atop McCardell Bicentennial Hall, will be open to the public for viewing the heavens on Friday evenings, April 29 and May 6, from 9 until 10:30 p.m., provided the skies are mostly clear.
