Indoor track and field athletes vie in Granite State meet

PLYMOUTH, N.H. — Indoor track and field athletes from Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Middlebury union high schools posted strong Division II results on Saturday at a meet hosted by Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.

Winning events were Mount Abe senior Lydia Pitts, who claimed the triple jump with an effort of 34 feet, 10.5 inches, and the VUHS boys’ four-by-800-meter relay team of Spencer Hurlburt, Xander DeBlois, Gabe Praamsma and Wade Mullin, who prevailed in 9:37.2.

MUHS grad joins USAF

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — U.S. Air Force Airman Nicholas D. Beattie graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Beattie is the son of Bryan B. Beattie and Tammi L. Beattie of Granville, Vt., and is a 2017 graduate of Middlebury Union High School.

Beattie completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Men's hockey skates to two ties

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team pulled out a pair of ties vs. visiting NESCAC foes this past weekend. The Panthers (4-12-2, 2-8-2) hit the road this coming weekend for games at league foes Wesleyan and Trinity.

On this past Saturday Panther goalie Stephen Klein made 39 saves as Middlebury and Tufts (4-11-3, 3-7-2 NESCAC) skated to a 1-1 tie.

Women's hockey wins two out of three

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team took over first place in NESCAC by defeating host Hamilton twice this past weekend, 2-1 in overtime on Saturday and 3-1 on Friday night, but fell to Plattsburgh, the No. 2 team in NCAA Division III, on Tuesday. 

The Panthers (12-4-1, 8-1-1 NESCAC) have a half-game lead over second place Connecticut (11-3-3, 7-1-2 league) in the league standings, while Hamilton (10-6-1, 7-3 NESCAC), slipped into third place. The Panthers are ranked No. 4 in this week’s NCAA poll.

Bristol Police Log: Police cite Winooski man for DUI No. 2

BRISTOL — Bristol police on Jan. 20 cited a Winooski man for driving under the influence of alcohol, second offense, following a traffic stop for defective equipment on Plank Road.

Police allege Christopher R. Grassley, 32, was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.105; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other action between Jan. 15 and 21, Bristol police:

•  Assisted a motorist who was locked out of a vehicle.

Middlebury Police Log: Child abuse under investigation

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated child abuse allegations involving a one-year-old child in the Court Street area on Jan. 25.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Helped the Addison County Sheriff’s Department with a prisoner at Porter Hospital on Jan. 22.

•  Responded to a report of a vehicle that had veered off Three Mile Bridge Road on Jan. 22.

•  Received truancy complaints involving two Middlebury Union Middle School (MUMS) students on Jan. 23.

Third anti-racism film to be screened in Middlebury next week

MIDDLEBURY — The third installment of the anti-racism film series Seeing Color/Seeking Justice, sponsored by Middlebury Showing up For Racial Justice (SURJ), will screen on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Marquis Theater. “Whose Streets?” depicts the unrest and activism in Ferguson, Missouri, in the wake of the police shooting of Michael Brown.
