ANESU to hold developmental screenings on March 15

BRISTOL — The Early Education Program of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANESU) will hold its developmental screenings on Wednesday, March 15, 1-4:30 p.m.

Children will have the opportunity to play in an early childhood classroom using art materials, blocks, puzzles and imaginative play materials.  Parents can share information about their child and learn more about their child’s communication, social, play and motor skills.

The screening is free and will take about one hour.

Fast on ice

MIDDLEBURY UNION HIGH School sophomore Lacey Greenamyre zips around the long track oval in Sainte-Foy, Quebec, earlier this winter, where she placed 10th out of more than 80 skaters in her age group.

This past weekend, she won four races (setting personal bests at three distances) at the Empire State Games at Lake Placid, N.Y. She also skated her first 42K marathon (109 laps on a 400-meter oval — that’s 26.2 miles), placed 1st in her age group, which got her a gold medal, and was the 2nd woman overall, earning a silver and a $200 prize.

Local World War II veteran honored by DAR

MIDDLEBURY — World War II veteran Doug Yantz received quite a surprise on Feb. 3. Three members of North Country Honor Flight along with Rena Trepanier and Joy Minns, members of the Seth Warner - Rhoda Farrand chapter of the DAR, showed up at his daughter’s home to present a few very special honors.

Community Foundation awards 'Small and Inspiring' grants: Local nonprofits recognized

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Community Foundation has announced that it has given Small and Inspiring grants to 30 project across the state — including four in Addison County.

Four nonprofit organizations in Addison County received a total of $8,000 in Small and Inspiring grants from VCF. One of a number of competitive grant rounds at the Community Foundation, the Small and Inspiring grants program funds work that helps connect people to their neighbors, their land and their history in ways that strengthen community.

Brandon to host 1860s-style social

BRANDON — On Saturday, Feb. 11, there will be a unique community event in Brandon. St. Thomas & Grace Church is hosting an 1860s style “Social” to commemorate a similar event held in February 1862 at the Brandon Town Hall as a fundraiser for St. Thomas Church, which was under construction.

The “social” will feature children’s games and food and drink from the 1860s.

Otter boys, VUHS girls lose in hoop

ADDISON COUNTY — Local high school hoop teams found the going tough earlier this week, as the Otter Valley boys and the Vergennes girls came up short.

Two games set for Tuesday were postponed. The game at Mount Abraham pitting the Eagle boys vs. Milton was moved to Feb. 13, and the OV girls’ visit to Mount Anthony was called off, with no immediate make-up date set.

The Middlebury boys visited Vergennes on Tuesday; see story on Page 1B.

Panther men's hoop fighting for top playoff seed

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team will host two NESCAC foes this weekend with a chance to nail down a home quarterfinal playoff game on Feb. 18.

The Panthers, ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division III before three wins last week, improved to 18-3, 6-2 in league play with wins at Bowdoin and Colby last weekend.

This weekend, they host No. 11 Amherst (16-4 overall and tied with the Panthers for second in NESCAC at 6-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.. On Saturday, fourth-place Trinity (14-8, 5-3) visits at 3 p.m.

Panther women's hockey battling for first place

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team swept two games at NESCAC rival Wesleyan this past weekend to reinsert itself into the race for first place in the league.

The Panthers, 12-5-2 overall, improved to 7-4-1 in NESCAC play, good for a second-place tie with Hamilton behind first-place Connecticut College. Connecticut has three league games left, one at Bowdoin (6-5-2 NESCAC), a team that has already defeated the Camels, and two home games vs. Hamilton.
