Vermont State Police Log: Addison man seriously hurt in snowmobile crash

ADDISON COUNTY — An Addison man was reported to be in serious condition at University of Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday — six days after he was injured in a snowmobiling accident near Dead Creek.

On Wednesday, Dec. 27, at around 4 p.m. Vermont State Police raced to the Dead Creek Fish and Wildlife Access off Route 17 in Addison for a report of an unresponsive man on the ice. Troopers found that 40-year-old Timothy Oemcke had crashed his Arctic Cat Crossfire 7 snowmobile on the access road. Police report that he was wearing a DOT-certified helmet at the time.

Vergennes Police Log: Christmas week proves routine for city police

VERGENNES — In a week during which Vergennes police busted the youths who allegedly stole items from as many as 14 cars on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and damaged another four vehicles (see story in A section), they also handled a number of somewhat more routine items.

Between Dec. 25 and 31, Vergennes police also:

•  On Dec. 25 helped vehicle owners get into their locked vehicles on Meadow Lane and Main Street.

•  On Dec. 26 helped a vehicle owner get into a locked vehicle on South Water Street.

Middlebury Police Log: Police look into sexual assault complaint

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a complaint of a sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident at a South Pleasant Street residence on Dec. 27. Local police referred the case to the Addison County Unit for Special Investigations.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a death at a Route 7 North residence on Dec. 25. Police said April Duclos, 43, had died from natural causes.

•  Helped Middlebury Regional EMS with a woman on Water Street who had expressed a desire to harm herself on Dec. 26.

Top 10, No. 1: Feds seek Lake Champlain cleanup cuts; state pushes back

Everybody uses it, but it’s often taken for granted.

Water.

And Vermont’s water made a lot of headlines in 2017 as lawmakers — amid steady pressure from the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency — continued to discuss an action plan to clean up the state’s waterways, with the focus primarily on Lake Champlain.

Reflecting what seems to be a broader consensus nationwide that it is OK — even necessary — for people to come out, wave placards with clever and pointed statements, and raise their voices, Addison County residents seemed to be out protesting a lot more in 2017.

Top 10, No. 3: Voters reject Mt. Abe bond – again

Will the third time be the charm?

That’s what proponents of a new bond vote to renovate the Mount Abe Union High School facility are hoping. A third vote among Addison Northeast Supervisory Union district voters is likely to be scheduled for this coming Town Meeting Day in March. That proposal will follow two prior defeats and a year of planning, haggling and anguish over what to do with the nearly 50-year-old building.

In his first year in office Gov. Phil Scott has put a spotlight on a seemingly untenable problem: the state’s declining school enrollment and increasing school spending. Scott challenged state legislators and local school boards to come up with a sustainable solution.

Top 10, No. 6: Porter starts new phase in medical affiliation

Porter Medical Center in 2017 officially sealed its affiliation with the University of Vermont Health Network, and immediately began planning for bigger things — including repairs to its nursing home and new facilities on its campus off South Street.

It was quite the turnaround for what is now known as the “University of Vermont/Porter Medical Center.”

Only a year earlier, PMC had been laying off staff, mopping up red ink and watching some of its health care providers leave for other jobs.
