Senate begins debate on search and rescue bill

MONTPELIER — When Vermont Senate Government Operations Committee chair Sen. Jeannette White, D-Windham, opened a hearing on H.182, the Search and Rescue Bill, last Wednesday she gave a nod toward Carol Ault and Kathy Duclos, who were seated in the cramped hearing room.

The two women are aunts of Levi Duclos, the 19-year-old New Haven man whose death while hiking in January 2012 launched public demand for a change in search and rescue procedures.

FERRISBURGH — “Where does our food come from?” is a question to which shoppers concerned about eating local have given careful consideration in recent years.

Ferrisburgh farmer and baker Erik Andrus has a slightly different take on it: “How does our food get to us?”

Long ago waterways, not roads, were the backbone of the Northeast’s regional food system. After decades of reliance on roads and automobiles to get foods to market, Andrus is taking a journey back in time.

Gauchier 2044.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Jamie Gaucher has only been Middlebury’s first-ever business development director for about 10 days, but he has already mapped out what he wants to accomplish during his next 90.

Gaucher’s plan is to lay a strong foundation for job growth in Middlebury that will include setting up new software to track corporate prospects, networking with Middlebury College alumni as well as state and local economic development officials, and meeting with local business leaders to get feedback on how to fill voids in the local job market.

City to vote May 14 on bond for a new police headquarters

VERGENNES — As expected, Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday warned a May 14 vote for a $1.45 million bond to fund a new 4,611-square-foot police station on North Main Street, one that will cost taxpayers $400,000 less than the proposal that was narrowly defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The plan calls for savings of about $300,000 in construction costs over the initial proposal, mainly due to a building redesign that cuts out a little more than 1,300 square feet, but also due to savings on site development and land costs. The project cost is now roughly $1.55 million.

MIDDLEBURY — Every good album has a story behind it. For Addison County native Jer Coons and music partner Caroline Rose, the story of their debut album, “America Religious” — which will be released on June 11 — began with a costly mistake.

“I accidentally bought a car,” Rose explained during a recent interview in her soon-to-be adopted hometown, Middlebury.

“Caroline’s life is defined by impulsive behavior,” offered Coons.

NEW HAVEN — On a recent morning in a sunlit room on Rivers Bend Road in New Haven, four-year-old Brian Henderson sat on the floor and pondered his next move. A pair of mittens on a string was placed next to him and his snowsuit was half on and half off. His teacher sat on the floor beside him; after some consideration, Brian moved over to sit on her lap.

Middlebury to vote Wednesday on $6.4 million school budget

Posted on April 8, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters on Wednesday, April 10, will meet at Mary Hogan Elementary School to decide a proposed 2013-2014 spending plan of $6,418,788, representing a 4.46-percent increase. The budget reflects, among other things, a growing commitment to science, technology, engineering and math programs.

But thanks in part to a student enrollment that’s expected to grow by 10 next fall (to a total of around 405), the property tax-affecting portion of the budget is expected to rise by only 0.82 percent, according to school administrators.
