MIDDLEBURY — Krista Sargent had lost part of her soul.

She reclaimed it with the help of others — and through a special poem that came from her heart.

“I am from the smell of Nana’s cookies baked all the time, hugs from Nana, whose long-gone porcelain dolls I remember as if they were mine,” the Vergennes resident writes.

“I am from being raped three times and living homeless in California, from doing drugs and learning better.”

Addison Crime Watch.jpg

ADDISON — When Addison resident Michele Kelly and her husband, Charles, moved to Vermont from Philadelphia a number of years ago, they didn’t foresee themselves in the middle of a crime wave.

But their home is just one of nearly a dozen in Addison — several in the past couple weeks — and many more in surrounding towns from which burglars in the past year have stolen, usually during daylight hours, items like jewelry, cameras, watches, computers, prescription drugs and family heirlooms.

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union board on Wednesday settled a lawsuit filed by its former business manager, thereby averting a jury trial that was slated to begin on Monday, May 6.

The settlement, forged through several hours of mediation between officials representing the ACSU and plaintiff Sharon Stearns, calls for the district to pay her $100,000 in what her attorney, Norman Watts, referenced as “lost compensation and other damages.”

CORNWALL — A little motion picture called “Iron Man 3” opened this past weekend.

Addison County has its own Ironman, whom you won’t be able to find at the movie theaters. This Ironman can swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 and then run a full, 26.2-mile marathon in one day — then go home and put her three kids to bed while holding down a full-time administrative job.

And she does it without a metal suit or computer-generated imagery.

Meet the Singers.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The Opera Company of Middlebury, now in its 10th season, has become a popular stop for talented young opera singers on their way to great careers. But there’s another big attraction.

“When these singers come to Middlebury they immediately feel as if they’re part of the community,” says OCM artistic director Douglas Anderson. “They make a lot of friends in the area, which is unusual, and one reason for that is ‘Meet the Singers.’”

ADDISON COUNTY — Spring has finally arrived, and across the region wildlife species are returning to their seasonal habitats, including flocks of migratory birds. But while there may seem to be an abundance of chirping birds returning to the area, the populations of Vermont’s seven grassland songbird species have, in fact, plummeted in recent years.

This year, an innovative project at the University of Vermont aims to restore habitat for one of those specie: bobolinks.

City to move carefully in considering smoking ban

Posted on May 2, 2013 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes Mayor Bill Benton said this week city officials would take a measured approach to a request by Vergennes Union High School 8th-graders to make the city’s pool and recreation areas and its central green off limits to smoking.

Benton said several decisions have to be made, including whether to treat the pool and recreation area differently than the city green, whether to address public smoking with laws enforceable with fines or with less strict policies, and whether to act and how quickly to do so.
