Bill on soil practices draws fire at legislative lunch

BRIDPORT — Water quality, regenerative agriculture certification, farm labor, and the legislative budgeting process topped the bill at Monday’s Ag Lunch at the Bridport Grange.

Close to 50 attendees gathered for the annual lunch, which is part of the legislative breakfast series co-sponsored by the Bridport Grange and the Addison County Farm Bureau.

ACSD considers moving 6th-grade to MUMS

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board is expected to vote this June on whether to expand Middlebury Union Middle School to include grades 6-8 beginning in the fall of 2018. It’s a move some district officials believe would allow teachers to more effectively deliver International Baccalaureate Program instruction.

Currently, sixth-graders in the ACSD are taught in elementary schools in the district-member communities of Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. MUMS serves children in grades 7 and 8.

Federal funding for lake cleanup hangs in balance

SALISBURY — Vermont lawmakers continue to be concerned about a potential decline in federal Environmental Protection Agency assistance for cleanup of Lake Champlain under the Trump administration.

Lake Champlain cleanup through the Clean Water Act was a topic of discussion at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the Salisbury Congregational Church.

Recent estimates have placed the lake cleanup costs at around $48 million annually over the next 20 years.

Playspace links classroom study and physical project

CORNWALL — Sixth-grade students at Bingham Memorial School in Cornwall, along with their teacher Emily Hoyler, embarked upon an interesting project last fall.

They were inspired by a field trip to Shelburne Farms for a workshop on some of the United Nations’ global sustainability missions.

MUHS competitors flex their intellectual muscles

MIDDLEBURY — Two of Middlebury Union High School’s most successful teams this year haven’t scored a single run, goal, touchdown or basket.

But they’ve scored a ton of points in academic competition.

A group of MUHS students continued the school’s stellar track record at the annual Vermont-NEA Scholars’ Bowl, placing in the top four in the varsity state tourney held on March 25.

Late winter is cabin fever season; after months of indoor living we find ourselves yearning for spring, and we can surely be forgiven for grumbling about Vermont’s recent March blizzard.

Wikipedia describes cabin fever as “a claustrophobic reaction from being confined in a small space for an extended period of time, resulting in extreme irritability and restlessness, often accompanied by an urge to go outside, even in rain, snow, dark or hail.” I certainly understand the urge to get outdoors, but I prefer to skip the rain, dark and hail.

VTrans to install temporary bridges over RR in downtown Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The long-awaited, $52 million effort to replace of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges is not expected to begin until early next year, but area residents this June will get a sneak preview of the major work to come. That’s when the Vermont Agency of Transportation will take out the deteriorating Merchants Row and Main Street spans and replace them with temporary bridges.

Khan tops the field in race for selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — When Farhad Khan emigrated from his native India to the United States in 1991, he had dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur and one day starting a family.

On Tuesday evening, with his wife looking on, Khan took the oath of office as a new selectman in Middlebury, where he owns and operates the One Dollar Market.

“I never, in my wildest dreams, expected this kind of support from the community,” Khan said on Wednesday morning.

“I’m excited to be a part of this important board.”

ADDISON COUNTY — It’s Tuesday morning at the Lawrence Memorial Library and Jensen Ringey is enjoying a good book the best way he knows how. The 13-month-old is sitting on his dad’s lap, enjoying the story his dad, Jameson, is reading out loud.

A little later, Jensen strikes out on his own, gleefully turns some pages and gently gnaws a corner. He looks up and beams, as only a 13-month-old can. There’s nothing like a good book!

Old motel sized up for new recovery center

MIDDLEBURY — The Turning Point Center of Addison County is considering the purchase of the Greystone Motel on Route 7 South in Middlebury for use as a potential recovery facility and detox center for people battling substance abuse.

Bill Brim, executive director of the Turning Point Center, or TPC, shared his organization’s preliminary plans for the property during an interview on Tuesday with the Independent and in a brief presentation to the Middlebury selectboard that evening.
