Forum shows basics of the local criminal justice system

MIDDLEBURY — A panel of some of the most influential members of Addison County’s criminal justice system said they are not aware of racial bias within the local courts or law enforcement agencies, but they vowed to be vigilant in detecting and eradicating such behavior if it were to ever becomes evident.

Vergennes residents sound off about truck traffic

VERGENNES — As might be expected, the topic of up to 800 tractor-trailer trucks rolling through downtown Vergennes dominated a Monday Vermont Transportation Board public hearing in Vergennes on “Vermont’s Transportation Future,” including passenger rail expansion, railroad safety and other railway issues as well as truck traffic.

About 30 local citizens attended the hearing at the Bixby Library in Vergennes, the first of seven planned around the state by the Vermont Transportation Board to take testimony on railroad and truck issues.

MIDDLEBURY — A half-century after earning his bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College, Randy Brock returned to his alma mater on Wednesday to encourage a new generation of Republican activists. He and former Gov. James Douglas of Middlebury were among the senior state GOP officials who helped the Vermont College Republicans group celebrate an election countdown event on campus.

Brock, 73, was happy to offer counsel to the young party faithful — but he was also asking them for votes.

Route 7 construction projects wrapping up for the season

ADDISON COUNTY — Work in Middlebury, New Haven and Ferrisburgh on two major Agency of Transportation Route 7 projects will soon be wrapped up for 2016.

According to a Friday email from VTrans spokesperson Stephanie B. Barrett, the 7.87-mile Route 7 paving project from High Street in Middlebury to just north of New Haven Junction will be complete on Monday, when workers will just be cleaning up for the year. Oct. 4 was the target completion date for 2016’s half of a mostly federally funded, $5.53-million project.

VERMONT — In her 20-some years as a documentary filmmaker, the Northeast Kingdom’s Bess O’Brien has taken on such hard-hitting subjects as heroin use, prescription drug addiction, domestic violence, sexual abuse and the 1994 rape and murder of 17-year-old Stephanie Sady of Rutland by her own uncle.

Now the award-winning O’Brien has trained her lens on the self-destructive and often secretive world of eating disorders.

'Traders' race through Vermont wilderness
