Middlebury asked to take reins of local teen center

Posted on October 26, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will study the prospect of merging the local teen center with the municipal Parks & Recreation Department as a way of giving the youth friendly operation long-term financial and organizational stability.

The selectboard on Tuesday voted unanimously — with members Brian Carpenter and Nick Artim absent — to consider the merger, with the caveat that Middlebury should not be expected to take on a bigger financial stake in the Addison Central Teens (ACT) center.

BRISTOL — It’s lunchtime at Mount Abraham Union High School and the large cafeteria is abuzz with students eating, chatting, laughing and catching a few fun moments with friends before the next bell rings and they troop off to classes.

More than anything, it’s loud. Deafeningly so. But it’s a lively loud, with so many students happy to be out of class, get some food, sit with buddies and take a break.

Witches. The mean ones we know from their clammy green skin, long pointy noses covered with warts, sharp crooked teeth and chilling cackle. The nice ones comfort us with their rosy cheeks, warm smile and sparkling eyes. What do they have in common? Magic.

Did you know Middlebury has its own witch? Her name is Nancie Dunn — don’t worry, she’s a nice one.

Guardians needed for kids in courts

Posted on October 23, 2017 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — State and local judiciary officials are desperately trying to recruit more volunteers to represent the interests of Addison County children who are part of the mounting number of juvenile cases flooding the court system.

The volunteers would act as guardians ad litem (GAL) — community members who make sure the voices of children get heard in court proceedings. These are children who come to the attention of the court for abuse or neglect, behavior issues or in some cases delinquency.

MIDDLEBURY — Most employers accept the fact that new hires will face a learning curve.

Fortunately, it will be more of a straight line than a curve for ç, who next month will officially begin his tenure as new executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corporation, or ACEDC.

Kenney joins the ACEDC with 16 years of experience administering Vermont Economic Progress Council programs that each year funnel millions of dollars in tax incentives to qualifying businesses seeking to grow in the Green Mountain State.

Kitchens can be stressful places. Sharp knifes fiercely chop, dice and mince the day’s ingredients. Hot pots bubble on a flaming stove. The chefs and cooks must work efficiently together, without getting in each other’s way, to quickly produce beautiful dishes for hungry customers.

A spill here, a slip there… could be the difference between great success and utter catastrophe. So it’s easy to understand how tensions can run a little hot.

But at Tourterelle in New Haven, head chef Bill Snell tries to keep it cool.

VERGENNES — About a year ago the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes was putting the finishing touches on a roughly $100,000 renovation of its School Street headquarters and had just hired longtime local afterschool program head Jill Strube as its new executive director.

It hoped to attract more young members who otherwise might have nothing better to do after school.

As the 2016-2017 school year began daily club attendance ran between 15 and 18 5th-through-12-graders, and the club’s total membership stood at 75.
