Voters reject Mount Abe bond for third time; new approaches sought

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

ADDISON COUNTY — After voters in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union on Tuesday defeated a $29.5 million bond for the renovation of Mount Abraham Middle/High School, 1,785–1,196, the pressing question is, “What now?”

The bond’s defeat for the third time most likely delays any construction until at least 2020, pending the ability of the 5-town community to agree on a building project, vote for a bond and start the design phase.

A garden for all seasons

Posted on March 8, 2018 |
By Judith Irven

Garden trio 1.jpg

This is the dream of gardeners everywhere: A garden that will be beautiful in every season — and indeed in every month — of the year. While this may seem to be a somewhat unreachable aspiration, I can assure you it is not at all out of the question.

We winter-weary Vermonters are already anticipating the flowers that will grace our gardens throughout the coming season. And many of us are also eagerly making plans for the new plants we hope to add in 2018.

Ever-changing seasons

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is giving the town of Middlebury $75,000 to help promote its downtown businesses and amenities this year during the first phase of work on the Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges.

The $75,000 is likely to be the first of three, like-sized annual grants VTrans will pass along to Middlebury to aggressively market and support its downtown through 2020, when work will be in full swing on a $71 million tunnel project that will replace two temporary spans.

BRISTOL — Vermonters are dying because they cannot afford health care, Montpelier physician Deb Richter told a gathering of concerned citizens at the Bristol firehouse Thursday night. Patients with little or no health insurance often delay seeking primary care until it is too late, she added.

“Our health care system is a catastrophe,” Richter said.

When you imagine a meal in a Laundromat it’s not glamorous. Maybe you have a candy bar and a bottle of warm soda as you watch your clothes spin around, or perhaps a smashed hamburger from a fast food joint down the road. Either way, it’s not awesome.
