Elementary school teacher to graduate after 49-year career

MIDDLEBURY — “Mary Hogan” is an almost mythical figure to the young Middlebury children who attend the graded school that bears her name. Verily, the veteran principal had retired long before most of the current students’ parents had wandered the halls of Mary Hogan Elementary School.

But those curious enough to inquire about Mary Hogan have always been able to talk to the inimitable Mary Doyle. That’s because Mrs. Doyle not only knew Mary Hogan, Doyle was hired by Mary Hogan — almost a half century ago.

Could Middlebury become a ski destination?

RIPTON — A good ski season, boosted in large part by new snowmaking at Rikert Ski Touring Center at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus, is helping set the stage for a renaissance in winter tourism in the greater Middlebury area.

“The past season was great in a lot of ways,” said Rikert Ski Touring director Mike Hussey. “While the weather was up and down, a real roller-coaster throughout the year, we were able to host our major events without worrying about whether we’d have adequate cover on the trails.

Cornwall targets gas pipeline; officials suggest Whiting route

CORNWALL — Many residents of Cornwall are hoping to convince Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) to leave their town off its list of potential routes for a new pipeline that would funnel natural gas from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

Green Up Day brings communities together

ADDISON COUNTY / BRANDON — For Marci Hayes and her family scouring the roads and byways in their hometown of Goshen and neighboring towns has become a rite of spring.

“I’ve been doing it forever, since I was growing up,” said Hayes.

Of course, there is a reason behind the Hayses’ annual ramble that many in Vermont will recognize. They are taking part in Green Up Day, and Marci Hayes is Goshen’s Green Up coordinator.

Schools consider shorter summer vacations

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County schools are being invited to adopt a new calendar that would reshape the academic year in a manner that would shorten the traditional summer vacation. In exchange for some shorter breaks, supporters believe the change would allow for more staff development, tutoring for students who need it most, and work-study arrangements involving kids and local businesses.

Timeless Brecht classic comes to Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — In 1928, on the cusp of one of the greatest economic crises in history, German poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht sat down to adapt John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera” for a theater in Berlin. The piece was a 19th century satire of Italian opera that offered a socialist critique of what both playwrights considered the pervasive corruption of capitalism at all levels of society.

Site work begins on Vt. Hard Cider's new $30 million plant

MIDDLEBURY — A veritable legion of bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks have begun moving tons of earth on a 27-acre parcel off Exchange Street to make way for construction of the new, 100,000-square foot, $30-million home of Vermont Hard Cider Co.

“It will be a world-class facility,” Vermont Hard Cider President and CEO Bret Williams said on Tuesday.

“It feels terrific to put this facility in the town of Middlebury, where it belongs.”
