BRISTOL — Around 40 teal-colored ribbons hanging from lampposts all around the Bristol village center announce that Turn the Towns Teal has come to Bristol. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the Turn the Towns Teal campaign aims to save women’s lives by “tealing” towns in all 50 states — and raising awareness of the disease and its symptoms.

Ribbons (biodegradable and made in the USA) stay up for all of September and are then removed.

Lawmaker fields questions on school consolidation act

Posted on September 4, 2015 |
By Gaen Murphree

LINCOLN — Community members brought questions straight to the source last week, when the Lincoln Community School Board hosted a question-and-answer session on the new Vermont law encouraging school consolidation with a lawmaker who helped shepherd Act 46 through the Legislature.

“We thought that a community forum on an important piece of legislation like this is always just a good starting point for any community going through changes,” said Rebecca Otey, Lincoln Community School Board chair.

FERRISBURGH — Neighbors of an almost completed Ferrisburgh manure pit are upset about its potential impact on their quality of life and about the pit approval process, and they have protested to the Agency of Agriculture, the Ferrisburgh selectboard and their elected state representatives.

The farmer and state officials say the pit not only follows all regulations, but it is environmentally sound and sited as far from neighbors as is practical.

VERGENNES — After some rocky times during the recent recession, the Vergennes Main Street nonprofit Sweet Charity is enjoying its most productive year.

The eight-year-old charitable venture, run by members of the Women of Wisdom organization, has in the first seven months of 2015 given away more than $30,000 that was raised from the sales of donated furniture, decorations and other household goods out of its Ryan Block storefront.

New Haven wrestles with tax impact of power project

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Gaen Murphree

NEW HAVEN — Some residents and elected officials are looking for answers to some basic questions from Anbaric Transmission about the company’s proposal to build a converter station at the New Haven VELCO substation to connect a 400 megawatt power line to the New England electric power grid.

The need for answers is particularly acute in a town that, in the words of a resident at an informational meeting last week, increasingly feels “like a dumping ground” for energy projects.

klopfenstein, joe.jpg

VERGENNES — Vergennes alderman and well-known area large-animal veterinarian Joe Klopfenstein will later this fall pull up his Vermont stakes after 30 years and leave for a teaching job with Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Klopfenstein, as much a fixture on the Vergennes musical scene as on the 33 dairy farms he serves with his veterinary partner, Annie Murphy, said he was made an offer that was too good to refuse — in part because he and his wife Nancy’s two sons both live in Oregon.

MIDDLEBURY — You’ll have to excuse educators with the county’s Diversified Occupations (D.O.) program if they are a little perplexed these days.

On the one hand, the Vermont Public Broadcasting Service has just hailed D.O. as one of four exemplary “champions” of education in Vermont for 2015, an honor that will include an award and a televised tribute during the month of September.
