Posted on February 9, 2017 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Local legislators on Monday criticized Gov. Phil Scott’s proposal that school districts budget the same amount of spending for fiscal year 2018 as they are for this year, saying such a move would unfairly restrict local budget planners and could run counter to a 20-year-old Vermont Supreme Court ruling on education funding.

Mount Abe fix-it list: 'more than a facelift'

BRISTOL — “It’s a well-built school. It’s a steel-frame building. It’s got a brick façade to it. It holds its heat very well,” Alden Harwood said of the Mount Abraham Union High School, which opened to students in 1969.

“But it’s an old building. It’s a 1960s-vintage building that needs more than a facelift,” he cautioned. “We’re starting to see many things that are at the end of their useful life.”

By John Flowers

n opendoor LEAD _death valley.jpg

STARKSBORO — Christiane Kokubo has seen many Hispanic people, most of them migrant workers, visit the Open Door Clinic (ODC) in Middlebury to receive free health care services. Kokubo, a communications specialist with ODC, never ceases to be touched by the stories of perseverance and isolation that these migrant workers convey to her while receiving vital medical attention.

Kokubo is currently viewing the migrant workers’ story from a decidedly different angle.

MONKTON — Last Resort Farm’s Eugenie Doyle has been farming for over three decades and writing poems, essays and stories for almost as many years. Her latest work, the award-winning picture book “Sleep Tight Farm,” celebrates the farming life.

Best read, as the Monkton resident suggests, snuggled up with a little kid as a bedtime book, “Sleep Tight Farm” is a paean to the enduring rhythms of work and season that keep people rooted in the Green Mountain State.

MONTPELIER — Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos recently issued the following statement in response to continued assertions by President Trump that 3 million to 5 million people voted illegally in the November elections:

As the chief state election official for the state of Vermont, I am fiercely proud of the work that Vermont’s town clerks and local elections officials do to ensure the integrity of our elections.

Voting is a Constitutional right at the very core of our democracy.

Few contested elections in Middlebury-area towns

Posted on February 6, 2017 |
By John Flowers

ADDISON COUNTY — Except in Bridport and Weybridge there will be few election-related issues to draw Middlebury-area voters to their polling places on Town Meeting Day, March 7.

Candidates for local school boards, selectboards and other municipal offices had until Jan. 30 to file nomination papers with their town clerks. A survey of town clerks in the Addison Central School District communities of Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge reveals:

•  There will be no school board races of any kind.

College and community challenge Trump ban: More than 500 back Muslim immigrants, refugees

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College sophomore Mehek Naqvi challenged the more than 500 people who rallied on campus Thursday afternoon to protest President Trump’s recent executive order banning visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries and all refugees.

A psychology and religion major from New Jersey, Naqvi denounced the ban as “an abhorrent practice based on religion” and asked what would happen if the 90-day ban extends to 90 months or 90 years? What would happen if the ban against citizens from seven countries expands to 14 or 28?

MIDDLEBURY — Victor Nuovo withdrew from his professorial duties at Middlebury College 23 years ago, but he has packed enough educational and intellectual activity in his golden years to fill a second résumé.

At an age when a lot of retirees would be happy to make it onto the golf course every once in a while, Nuovo, 85, has been playing his “back nine” in the storied halls of Oxford University, researching, compiling and editing books on the great 17th-century philosopher John Locke.

Dale Helms crafts fine furniture for function in his Bristol workshop

BRISTOL — Though Dale Helms has been making fine furniture for almost three and a half decades, he doesn’t call himself an artist. I know, it’s hard to believe. It’s even more unbelievable when you find out how much goes into every piece of his furniture. From a simple cheeseboard to a grand chair, dresser or bed, Helms has given thought to every inch of the piece; everything is done with intention.
