Denu, Swift House efforts are recognized

FERRISBURGH — Among those community leaders who excel at contributing to their communities, Middlebury businessman Eric Denu was named the 2013 Addison County Chamber of Commerce Buster Brush Citizen of the Year at the chamber’s annual meeting last week. The Swift House Inn was recognized as the Business of Year, and the Community Achievement Award went to Addison County Home Health and Hospice.

The awards were presented Thursday night, Sept. 12, at the Basin Harbor Club in front of a crowd of 100.

Hundreds weigh in on gas pipeline proposal in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — More than 500 people from throughout the state packed the Middlebury Union Middle School gym on Tuesday to weigh in on a proposed 43-mile natural gas pipeline, with most of the commenters urging the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) to deny Vermont Gas Systems the permit it needs to pursue the $70 million project.

Like many citizens who spoke, New Haven resident Craig Zondag addressed environmental issues, including the fact that some of the gas in the pipeline would have been captured using a controversial drilling technique called fracking.

Grant aids in fight against sex crimes on Middlebury College campus

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s ongoing efforts to prevent sexual assault and dating violence on campus received a major assist on Monday in the form of a three-year, $272,258 federal grant to enhance programs for victims while providing training to advocates to counsel students on how to avoid falling prey to assaultive behavior.

County's apple crop called best in years

ADDISON COUNTY — A sunny May, a rain-rich early summer and some recent cold nights have produced the perfect recipe for the state’s apple crop, already dubbed by area orchardists to be the best in years.

“It’s a bumper crop,” said Bill Suhr of Shoreham’s Champlain Orchards, which grows more than 50 varieties of apples that are hanging heavy on the trees.

“We have a lot of fruit available.”

Lincoln man heads west to fight Idaho wildfires

LINCOLN — Western states plagued by hot, dry conditions have been beset by wildfires this summer. In late August, more than 50 large wildfires were burning across 10 states, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

When local resources are strained, towns and municipalities request assistance from agencies in other parts of the country.

Addison considers the future of its town hall

ADDISON — The Addison selectboard has set a Sept. 16 public informational meeting on the future of the now vacant former Addison Town Hall on Route 22A, and that gathering will also focus on a septic system that could serve not only that building, but also the Addison Community Baptist Church and the town’s nearby fire station and clerk’s office.

Denecker Chevrolet eyes Route 22A parcel, move to prominent intersection

FERRISBURGH — Denecker Chevrolet co-owners Tom Denecker and Mike Capra have emerged as potential buyers of land owned by the town of Ferrisburgh at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

Denecker and Capra, whose dealership has a Ferrisburgh showroom at the intersection of Route 7 and Monkton Road and a Vergennes service center on North Main Street, met behind closed doors with the Ferrisburgh selectboard on Sept. 3 to discuss the 34.9-acre parcel. Ferrisburgh has been marketing it since September 2010 for $375,000.

Town of Middlebury to discuss acquisition of Lazarus building

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Monday, Sept. 9, will review a proposed agreement with Middlebury College that would culminate in the demolition of the Lazarus building at 20 Main St. and the consolidation of property off Bakery Lane that would then be marketed for an as-yet undefined economic development initiative.

Middlebury College athletic facility upgrade called a plus

MIDDLEBURY — The first stage of a big construction project at the Middlebury College athletic facilities is nearing completion as work on a major new component of the complex continues apace.

The new 17,800-square-foot squash facility behind Kenyon Arena should be finished by October, before the start of the college squash season. The expanding construction site on the Route 30 side of the Peterson Family Athletic Facility is being readied for a new 110,000-square-foot field house, due to be completed in October 2014.
