Emergency order authorizes temporary spans for Middlebury this June

By Angelo Lynn

MIDDLEBURY — On Monday morning Vermont Transportation Secretary Joe Flynn issued an emergency order authorizing the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) to install two temporary bridges over the railroad tracks in downtown Middlebury in advance of a long-planned tunnel project.

While recent inspections have shown the bridges on Main Street and Merchants Row to be safe for travel, evidence of accelerated deterioration has prompted the agency to rapidly install temporary bridges this summer as a precautionary measure.

Take down bird feeders in spring

n VTF&W Bear MAKE LEAD HZ.jpg

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says warm spring weather and melting snows will cause bears to come out of their winter dens in search of food. The department recommends taking down bird feeders on April 1 to avoid attracting them.

Bears are very fond of suet and bird seed, especially black oil sunflower seed. Bringing feeders in at night doesn’t work, because bears will still feed on seed that is spilled on the ground.

Local book finds unlikely Asian market: Pritchard's update of classic strikes a chord

n StanfordPrichard2585.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The deposits into Stanford Pritchard’s National Bank of Middlebury account arrive at random hours, but usually in the middle of the night.

Of course, that makes perfect sense. The funds come from a literary agency in Seoul, South Korea, and the day’s quietest hours in small-town Vermont are the busiest in a hub of Asian commerce.

Pritchard, a writer born in Washington, D.C., and educated at Haverford College and the University of Chicago, moved to Middlebury in 1978 with a former flame.

VERGENNES — Middle of last week, Aaron Gratton, 24, was visiting his grandparents, who live at 52 Armory Lane in Vergennes, a senior housing residence.

He realized that the 150-foot path that many of the residents take to walk to the Shaw’s supermarket parking lot was inaccessible to the residents because of the large snowfall.

On his own initiative, Gratton volunteered to shovel the path, including into the parking lot.

Feds could ICE-out dairy economy: Deporting workers would 'devastate' farms

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont dairy farmers and farmworkers are in an increased state of alert as federal immigration authorities begin enforcing President Trump’s immigration policies. What the White House described as taking “the shackles off” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (known as ICE) and other agencies has resulted in shifts in policy that more aggressively target deportation of foreign workers — including farmworkers who have overstated their visas.

MIDDLEBURY — Like most of us, Robin Ingenthron spent Tuesday weathering a major winter storm.

Actually, he’s had a lot of experience surviving storms of both the natural kind and those endemic to the business world.

Major setbacks threatened to bury his Middlebury enterprise, Good Point Recycling, several times during the past three years.

But Ingenthron refused to give up, and Good Point has emerged stronger than ever in a recycling industry that has chewed up and spit out many of his former competitors throughout the country.
