Local theater troup breathes life into a dysfunctional family in 'Gamma Rays'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Actors Workshop’s fall production is an intensely lyrical American play, Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds.” Despite that sci-fi sounding title taken from the name of a science fair project, the play is about a New York family caught in poverty and despair.

Planners weigh in on solar guidelines

MIDDLEBURY — As the pace and scale of solar development has accelerated in Addison County, communities have become increasingly concerned about how to regulate development so as to balance the need for renewable energy with the desire to preserve Vermont’s rural, historic and natural landscapes. And the pressure is intensifying as the industry accelerates movement toward Vermont's goal of getting 90 percent of its energy from renewables by 2050.

Middlebury eyes traffic calming on three roads

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials are seeking public feedback to come up with some traffic calming measures for three problem roads in town.

At issue is a traffic calming study coordinated by consultants Dubois & King, thanks to a grant through the Addison County Regional Planning Commission. The town chose, as study subjects, three different examples of local roads — and not necessarily those that see the most traffic, explained Middlebury selectboard Chairman Dean George.

Call of the elephants: Local girl helps pachyderms in Thailand

CORNWALL — Eleven-year-old Cady Scout McKibben-Baier recounts how, during her “younger days,” she used to be interested in hyenas. Of course that was a loonnnnnng time ago, when she was in first grade.

Now in grade 6 at Cornwall’s Bingham Memorial School, Cady Scout is all about elephants.

“I started drawing elephants, and I just loved them, and then I got obsessed with them,” she said in an interview last Thursday.

Champion of sustainable development wins two leadership awards

STARKSBORO — To spend any time at all with Ellen Kahler is to be inspired that a better world is possible.

The 48-year-old Starksboro resident recently won two state awards for leadership toward a sustainable economy: the Vermont Natural Resource Council’s Art Gibb Award for Individual Leadership and the inaugural Con Hogan Award for Creative, Entrepreneurial Community Leadership.

Experience and youth prevail in Ripton road races

RIPTON — Youthful energy took all the honors in the Ripton Ridge Run’s 5K, but the experience and staying power of maturity proved key in the 10K. The 28th annual Ridge Run on Sunday, Oct. 12, attracted about 185 runners and walkers who tested their legs on the hilly, autumnal roads of Ripton. Family and friends joined them on a gorgeous sunny day for the post-race lunch, awards ceremony and raffle.

Town of New Haven gets hearings on solar projects

NEW HAVEN — The state’s utility regulators will give the town of  New Haven a voice in their consideration of three separate proposed solar power projects. The town, which boasts open fields and a proximity to a main power transmission line, has been the target for many solar array proposals.

Town officials are glad to get a chance to protect their interests.

Bristol ready to break ground on new firehouse

BRISTOL — Just under a year ago, a grim engineering report on the state of Bristol’s 1897 fire station ignited the town to redouble its efforts to rehouse the town’s firefighters in a safe and efficient modern facility.

Builders are slated to break ground in less than two weeks on a new firehouse on a 9-acre parcel on the south side of West Street near the entrance to the Bristol recreation fields.

Patton inaugurated as college's first woman president

MIDDLEBURY — Laurie Patton stood before a microphone on a stage in front of Old Chapel on the Middlebury College on Sunday morning bathed in applause.

“Hello, Middlebury!” the newly minted president of the 215-year-old institution warmly greeted her cheering audience.

And thus began — officially, the tenure of Middlebury College’s 17th president.
