Octogenarian swims Lake Dunmore David-Benedict-Dumore-swim-9-3-16screenshot.png

SALISBURY — I did it! It was a “Super Swim” that I did across Lake Dunmore on Sept. 3, 2016, at the age of 82.5 years!

I had been thinking about doing it for a number of years because that’s the lake where I learned to swim in the late 1930s. My family has been coming to our camp at the Pine Needle on Beaver Pond Road every year since then.

MIDDLEBURY — Odds are most residents of Addison County have encountered graphic designer Matt Heywood’s work, though they probably didn’t know it at the time.

Anyone who has used the Addison Country Transit Resources public transportation system, sipped from an Aqua Vi-Tea Kombucha bottle, used Full Sun products or entered the Vermont Book Shop in downtown Middlebury has witnessed Heywood’s craftsmanship.

In the 16 months since Green Peak Solar LLC filed for permission from the Vermont Public Service Board, the Next Generation Solar Farm project has generated plenty of controversy.

MIDDLEBURY — A new grant will direct more than $600,000 to Addison County over the next five years for programs aimed at preventing local teens and young adults from abusing alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.

After years of fighting the opiate epidemic in Vermont at the point where people need help cleaning up, one local leader charged with spending the new grant money is happy to open a new front in the battle.

SUDBURY — The Miller Hill Farm in Sudbury has seen everything from Abenaki hunting encampments to dairying and subsistence farming to a retail/wholesale plant nursery. For current owners Carl Phelps and Nan Jenks-Jay, restoring the historic property a few hundred yards west of Otter Creek has been both a labor of love and an effort to keep a working farm working.

“We bought the place in 1998,” said Phelps. To which Jenks-Jay quipped, “It had 18 outbuildings and every barn had three feet of manure in it.”
