By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes Mayor Michael Daniels made official in a Wednesday phone interview what he hinted at during last Tuesday’s city council meeting: He will not run again for his office next March.

“I am stepping down,” Daniels said on May 23. “I am going to stay active in the community in some way, shape or matter ... But unless something changes drastically, I am not running again next year ... I’m still having fun, but it’s time for a fresh set of eyes.”

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Former Vermont Gov. James Douglas has penned an autobiography in which he touches upon the highlights of almost 40 years in Vermont politics. In the book, due to be released before year’s end, Douglas offers some candid thoughts on some of the state and federal lawmakers with whom he worked during a political career that he says he has no interest in rekindling.

The underlying theme of the Middlebury Republican’s book will be “How can a Republican succeed in Vermont?”

Nuovo, 80, keeps marching along

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury state Rep. Betty Nuovo has never been one to be intimidated by numbers — whether they be state statistics, budget numbers or long odds.

So it should come as no surprise that the county’s longest-serving legislator is not in the least bit fazed by the number 80, which was the birthday she marked late last year.

“I feel great,” said Nuovo, a Democrat who has spent more than a quarter-century in the Vermont House and will be asking voters this fall to give her another two years.

VERGENNES — Larry Carlson was on the waiting list for an apartment in the Vergennes Senior Housing building for more than three years. Once construction began, he checked back every week to see if he would get in. Now a resident of the newly opened facility off Armory Lane, he is thrilled with his experience.

“As soon as the architect first came out, I was over to the offices and signed up. I was here every single week to check and see how the progress was coming,” said Carlson.

Bristol may oust planner over apparent conflict

Posted on May 24, 2012 |

BRISTOL — When Katie Raycroft-Meyer — the newest addition to the Bristol Planning Commission — received a call from Bristol Town Administrator Bill Bryant Tuesday morning, she was surprised, to say the least.

Bryant informed her that she might lose her newly appointed seat because of her potential participation in a legal proceeding in which the town is involved — an accusation she adamantly denied.

Memorial Day parades and ceremonies are planned, in chronological order, in Orwell, Middlebury, Brandon, Hancock, Vergennes and Bristol.

Orwell kicks off two days of activities with its 39th annual Sunday afternoon parade, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last about 45 minutes.

Huntington joins county election scene

Posted on May 24, 2012 |
By John Flowers

HUNTINGTON — For the first time in decades, candidates competing for Addison County’s two state Senate seats will be straying north, rather than south, to pick up extra votes.

That’s because, barring a court challenge, Huntington and Buel’s Gore will soon join Addison County’s senatorial district in place of Brandon, which will return to Rutland County’s voting district. The Vermont Legislature and Gov. Peter Shumlin recently approved these changes as part of the decennial reapportionment process.
