Mullin tops the field in 2014 campaign funding

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the candidates in the county’s four contested House districts raised in excess of $9,000 in an effort to get elected this past Nov. 4, according to campaign finance records available online through the Vermont Secretary of State.

Those records, covering campaign expenditures through Nov. 1, show the latest fund-raising totals for the candidates — including the size and origin of the contributions in excess of $100, as well as how many donations they received of less than $100.

Same-sex marriage rooted in Weybridge

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont had the distinction in 2000 of becoming the first state in the union to approve a civil unions law, through which same-sex couples were extended many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Nine years later, Vermont became the first state to approve a same-sex marriage law without being required to do so by a court decision.

Middlebury eyes two-deck structure for more parking

MIDDLEBURY — An organization representing downtown Middlebury property owners is requesting that the town import and install a temporary parking structure to make up for the long-term loss of approximately 50 spaces during replacement of the railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

Phase I pipeline inches southward

WILLISTON — Even as the first snowflakes of the year fell in the Champlain Valley Thursday, it was easy for any observer to note the progress construction crews have made on Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a 41-mile natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

A tour hosted by Vermont Gas Systems officials shuttled reporters to different sites around Chittenden County where workers are digging trenches and laying pipe.

Landowners in Monkton rebuff Vt. Gas offers for easements

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems on Tuesday announced that it had secured 75 percent of the easements it needs to build Phase I of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project, a pipeline that will run 41 miles from Colchester to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The South Burlington company said it had made “significant progress” by securing easements for 166 of 221 parcels needed for the route.

Vt. Sun reaps benefits of solar

MIDDLEBURY — You’d think that with a name like Vermont Sun Fitness Center, Steve Hare’s business would have gone solar sooner.

The notion of installing solar power panels at the gym off Exchange Street in Middlebury did occur to Hare about a decade ago. But back then, the businessman says, solar arrays were expensive and took a longer period to pay off installation costs than they do now.

Now, he says, thanks to changes in technology and production techniques, that’s changed.

Area towns struggle to comply with new public records law

ADDISON/STARKSBORO — Two Addison County towns have found different answers to a challenge posed by revisions the Legislature made to Vermont’s Open Meeting Law this past session, a challenge shared by a number of towns statewide.

Vermont towns have always been required to make available drafts of meeting minutes within five days. The revised law also requires towns with websites to post those draft minutes online in that same timeframe.
