EAST MIDDLEBURY — More than 80 area residents turned out at the Middlebury State Airport this past Tuesday evening to learn more about a proposed runway renovation/expansion project.

Many took the chance to voice their concerns about the possibility that those upgrades — and others laid out in a state airports master plan — could bring larger planes, heavier and larger aircraft traffic, more noise and possibly more lighting to what is now a modest airfield nestled in a residential neighborhood.

HANCOCK — With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start of summertime riding, local bicyclists already have their eyes set on some of the most challenging outings in their neighborhood. Crisscrossing the spine of the Green Mountains, a ride through the Lincoln, Brandon, Appalachian and Middlebury gaps makes for a fearsome quartet of climbs and descents with thousands of vertical feet gained and lost as one passes from the Champlain Valley to the Mad River Valley and back again.

SeniorWalk8323.jpg

As the prospect for retirement nears, whether you’re 63 or 80, hobbies and pastimes become more and more priceless in terms of personal enjoyment and fulfillment. The challenge is to pursue ones that last a lifetime.

Power weight-lifting is out after age 70 or so for most, but bird-watching is definitely in and, like gardening, can have moments of adventure, excitement and physical activity, not to mention years of satisfaction.

As the Legislature adjourned on Saturday, state senators, representatives and the governor all could count some accomplishment in the session.

LEICESTER — In what local mosquito control officials are calling a “perfect storm” for breeding, the 2015 mosquito season may be one of the worst in recent memory, especially for residents living on private roads.

Last week’s first hatching of the season created mosquito swarms of epic proportions even for this area, which is used to dealing with high numbers of mosquitoes each spring and summer.

Flower girls in Brandon_Generations Radler.jpg

BRANDON — Every year on the last Monday in May, a group of first-grade girls in white dresses clutch bunches of fresh lilacs in their small hands. They walk single file up Center Street from the Brandon Post Office, smiling and waving to their families and friends. They follow the American Legion Color Guard and the Otter Valley and Neshobe School marching bands, and are joined by the Pittsford and Brandon fire department engines. The small parade with a purpose makes its way to the gazebo in Central Park.
