PANTHER HOOP AND EDWARDS SPEAKS

Just a few quick notes today on the Panther men’s hoop game yesterday. Senior captain Tim Edwards was kind enough to talk to me for almost five minutes afterward and reflect back on his four years with the Middlebury College program as well as the Panthers’ exciting rally against Trinity.

Not everything fit in the article that will come out tomorrow, which will focus on how the Panthers came back from five points down with six minutes to go, and how Trinity used a smart game plan to put Middlebury in the hole.

Form, or as the guys on ESPN radio like to say, “the chalk,” prevailed on Wednesday night: the Middlebury, Otter Valley, Mount Abraham and Vergennes girls’ basketball teams all won their first-round Division II playoff games at home. Details on all, including a full write-up and photos from Mount Abe, will be in the Thursday paper.

OK, first up: Tickets for Saturday’s Middlebury College men’s hoop quarterfinal may be hard to come by. GIRLS' HOOP GAMES

Well, the Vermont Principals’ Association released the girls’ basketball seeds this morning, and it confirmed the bad news for Middlebury, while Otter Valley, Mount Abraham and Vergennes ended up with the Nos. 6, 7 and 8 seeds, respectively, as expected.

All four teams ultimately did well enough to host first-round games, all at 7 p.m. on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

View from the Borderland: Why Leicester should send its students to Neshobe

After two go-rounds, Leicester is still a wallflower at the school merger dance, having been turned down by Sudbury and most recently by Salisbury. It’s time to invite Leicester’s 60 students and all of the town’s taxpayers to come join us at Neshobe Community School in Brandon. We certainly have the room.

View from the Borderland: Socioeconomic diversity in Vermont schools

Posted on February 8, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Rebecca Reimers

The greatest diversity challenge that Vermont public schools face is socioeconomic. I discovered this during my first few days as a teacher at Middlebury Union High School. My senior advisory, which included a random cross-section of that year’s graduating class, socialized almost exclusively along class lines: those who were going to college versus those about to enter the workforce.

View from the Borderland: Penny drive sheds light on Brandon economy

For the last two years, my friend and I have been asking area businesses to put mason jars on their counters for the month of November. Our goal is to gather pennies from customers to donate to the Brandon Area Food Shelf. The great thing about collecting pennies is that for adults, they are almost meaningless.

View from the Borderland: A call for alternative energy in Brandon's suburbs

Posted on January 8, 2010 | Blog Category:
By Rebecca Reimers

Economists and peace activists have long pointed out that the true cost of oil-based energy is not adequately accounted for or paid by us consumers: the pollution it generates, the treatment for diseases it necessitates, the environmental damage that needs to be ameliorated, and the military presence we provide in order to ensure our oil supplies all have costs that are not on our utility bills. Forcing oil, coal and nuclear energy providers to internalize the costs had proven almost impossible due to their strong lobbyist presence in Washington, D.C. and in state capitols.
