Middlebury Police Log: Police deal with barking dogs, domestic disputes

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a domestic disturbance at a North Pleasant Street home on Nov. 20. Police said a woman called to say her boyfriend was “being difficult.” Police said the boyfriend acknowledged having some problems and was referred to the Counseling Service of Addison County.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a report on Nov. 17 that a stolen check had been forged and cashed at a Court Street Extension bank in October.

Bristol Police Log: Cops busy with out-of-control students, drunk drivers

BRISTOL — Bristol police dealt with a variety of incidents in the month of October, according to a crime log issued last week by Chief Kevin Gibbs. They included out-of-control students, drug violations, drunken driving and several false alarms.

In those 31 days, Bristol police:

•  On Oct. 1 at 10:50 a.m. were asked by officials at Mount Abraham Union High School to issue a no-trespass notice against a former student.

Vermont State Police Log: Two cited for DUI, speeding

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police reported two local instances in the past week in which they stopped motorists for speeding and ended up citing those drivers for driving under the influence as well.

First, on Nov. 20 at 10:25 p.m. state police stopped Cody Brown, 23, of Ferrisburgh for speeding on Plank Road in New Haven. During the stop Brown was found to be under the influence of alcohol. His preliminary blood alcohol content at roadside was measured at 0.086 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

USDA offers tips for cooking Thanksgiving turkeys safely

WASHINGTON — Thanksgiving is the largest meal many cooks prepare each year. Getting it just right, especially the turkey, brings a fair amount of pressure whether or not a host is experienced with roasting one. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing food safety recommendations on how to properly prepare a turkey to make sure yours is both delicious and safe to serve.

Break-in at Dakin

FERRISBURGH — About $1,000 of cash was stolen from the Route 7 Dakin Farms store in Ferrisburgh on Monday evening, Vermont State Police said.

According to a VSP press release, the thief or thieves broke into the building through a back door at about 6 p.m., about an hour after the store’s closing time.

VSP responded to the Dakin Farm business at about 7 p.m. and began investigating the crime.

As you put together a dinner plan for this Thanksgiving, perhaps you’re looking for something to add a little variety to the traditional holiday meal, or ways to eat healthy food while supporting good environmental practices. How about adding insects to the menu? Along with crackers and cheese, grasshopper fritters make excellent appetizers. Or consider adding sautéed crickets and greens as a side to your potatoes, turkey and gravy. What about cricket flour fruitcake instead of the typical pumpkin pie?

City electronics firm nabs $200k loan from state

VERGENNES — A high-tech manufacturing company in Vergennes shared in $6.3 million in loans announced by the Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA) for economic development projects totaling over $16.5 million throughout Vermont. The authority projected the loans should create more than 100 new jobs throughout Vermont within three years of completion of the financed projects.
