VERGENNES — The new-look Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team on Saturday earned its first win of this season, 53-42, over visiting Montpelier.
After graduating 11 seniors from the 2013 Division II champs, the 1-2 Commodores had already absorbed two more losses than that 24-0 team, and even the usual strong fan support in their gym looked lacking.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team split a pair of games last week. The Tigers are 5-1 and are in a battle for first place in Division II with two other one-loss teams, Northfield and Burr & Burton, both of whom will play in the Tigers’ annual holiday tournament this week at the Memorial Sports Center.
WINOOSKI — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of road games last week and remains winless at 0-4. The Eagles will look to bounce back on Saturday vs. Randolph, which defeated them this past Thursday.
In that game, four Randolph players hit for at least 11 points as the host Ghosts coasted past the Eagles, 91-46. Sawyer Kamman (16) and Whit Lower (10) led the Eagles.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team defeated visiting Randolph this past Wednesday, 109.1-101-15 at the Middlebury Union Middle School gymnasium.
Senior Lindsay Wells led the Tigers with three first-place finishes (one of them a tie with Tiger junior Hannah Stoll), and freshman Mikayla Robinson also won an event.
In the individual events, the results were:
1. Brittney Malik, 8.0, (R).
2. Stoll, 7.95, (M).
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team lost a Wednesday game this week, and now heads into the Tigers’ annual holiday tournament. The Tigers’ Saturday game at Lyndon was rescheduled for Feb. 17.
MUHS will take on Northfield at 7 p.m. on Friday, and on Saturday will play in a 3 p.m. consolation or 7 p.m. final against either Lake Placid or Northeast Clinton Central.
ADDISON COUNTY — All four local union high school girls basketball teams found tough sledding in games played late last week.
BARRE — The Middlebury Union High School wrestling team opened its dual-meet season with a pair of NVAC wins at Spaulding on Thursday, one over the host Tide and one over county rival Mount Abraham.
The Tigers topped the Tide, 36-30, and defeated the Eagles, 42-18.
Against the Eagles, the Tigers earned a 3-1 edge in contested weight classes and a 4-2 edge in forfeits.
