ADDISON COUNTY — In the spring of 2006 Seth Kittredge had been in the Vermont Army National Guard for nine years and was ready to move on, take the next big steps in his life. He was ready to focus on his career; he’d just met the woman he would eventually marry.

“I was on my last enlistment, I was looking at getting out of the Guard so I could pursue my surveying career,” Kittredge recalled in a recent interview.

Then the Vergennes resident’s unit, the 131st Engineers, was activated for duty in the Iraq war.

Route 7 Dollar General project clears hurdle

FERRISBURGH — Environmental Court Judge Thomas Durkin on Oct. 24 ruled in favor of a group of landowners who would like to build a Dollar General store on a 9.9-acre Ferrisburgh parcel that lies at a prominent Route 7 intersection across from Vergennes.

Neighbors, joined by a number of other Ferrisburgh residents, had appealed the Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment’s (ZBA) approval of the 10,640-square-foot store, which Group Five LLC intends to build across Route 7 from the Ferrisburgh Solar Farm and across Monkton road from Denecker Chevrolet.

McKibben speaks on global warming and the election

Ripton resident Bill McKibben is the founder of 350.org, a global grassroots movement working to solve the climate change crisis, and Shumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College. The award-winning journalist has spent more than two decades writing about global warming.

County trash district spending budgeted to rise

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) directors on Nov. 15 will seek public feedback on a proposed 2013 annual budget of $2,667,844. The spending plan reflects a 3-percent increase largely driven by the creation of some new savings accounts designed to help the district meet the requirements of Act 148, a major new recycling law that will begin to sweep the state in 2014.

Incumbents win in uncontested elections

ADDISON COUNTY — In addition to the contested races for seats in the Vermont House of Representatives, voters in several Addison County towns returned incumbent lawmakers to the House in three uncontested elections.

Winning two-year terms representing the two-seat Addison-1 district were Democratic Reps. Paul Ralston and Betty Nuovo of Middlebury. Also, Democratic Reps. Michael Fisher and David Sharpe won re-election in Addison-4 (Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro).

Panther field hockey claims NESCAC title, NCAAs this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey program will begin its quest for its first NCAA Division III title since 1998 by hosting a four-team regional tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The 17-0 Panthers, ranked No. 1 in the final regular season poll, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the NESCAC tourney on their home turf this past weekend. They claimed a 3-2 shootout victory over second-seeded Bowdoin in Sunday’s final after edging fifth seed Amherst in overtime on Saturday, also by 3-2.

Former Tiger standout returns to coach girls' hoop team

MIDDLEBURY — A member of the 2004 Division I championship Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team has been hired as the new head coach of the program.

Mary Nienow, a 2005 MUHS and 2009 Castleton State College graduate who scored 1,000 points for the Spartan women’s hoop team, is taking over from MUHS chemistry teacher Cindy Atkins.

This past winter, Nienow assisted Atkins, who was Nienow’s coach for three years at MUHS.

OV athletic director to coach girls' basketball

BRANDON — New Otter Valley Union Activities Director Steven Keith will be doing double duty this winter: He was chosen in late October as the school’s new girls’ basketball coach.

Keith, a 2003 OVUHS graduate, has basketball coaching experience: He has run camps at OV and in Massachusetts; coached AAU basketball, including U-15 girls’ teams; and assisted at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

OV Co-Principal Jim Avery said he hopes Keith will be a long-term answer for a program that has seen some turnover at the coaching position.
