Opinion: Shumlin's support of fracked gas is embarrassing

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Bobbie Carnwath

Open letter to Governor Shumlin:

Your quick trip to the world stage in Paris resulted in an awkward performance that embarrassed us back home in Vermont. It is difficult to say which was worse, your patronizing dismissal of Ms. Johnson-Kurts, or your apparent inability to understand that an energy policy that is dependent upon a buildout of fracked gas infrastructure is the opposite of a solution to the climate crisis.

Opinion: Governor's treatment of protester was condescending

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Mary Martin

Climate leader or liar, protester or protector? The public can decide which is more accurate.

Gov. Peter Shumlin has done it again. It’s bad enough when he does it in our state but he did it in Paris. He dismissed a protester, Aly Johnson-Kurts, with a verbal pat on her fanny. “OK, thank you. You’re beautiful. You’re eloquent. … Why don’t you run along back to Smith (referring to Smith College)?”

Opinion: Many deserve thanks for helping animals in need

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Jessica Danyow

The season of giving has made me reflect on the many ways that our communityhas supported Homeward Bound over the year. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people who have helped turn life around for the homeless and neglected animals that come to our shelter.

Thank you to volunteers who have given countless hours providing one-on-oneTLC with the dogs, cats, rabbits and other residents of Homeward Bound. You have given them hope.

Rail bridge project provides a reason to unite and rebel

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

It’s rare that any Vermont community would have cause to rebel against a state-sanctioned project that purports to benefit the town. In Middlebury, however, that time has come.

Opinion: 'Twas the Night After Christmas

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Rustan Swenson

’Twas the Night After Christmas

’Twas the night after Christmas and all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, except for a mouse.

Piles of debris and throw-away toys

Is all that remained from the wee girls and boys.

Children was nestled all snug in their beds

With cell phones and new apps tucked under their head.

Sacred icons once shaped with our hands

Opinion: Court's leniency caused harm

Posted on December 17, 2015 |
By Cathy Degraw

My 17-year-old son was assaulted by Chad Levasseur in Vergennes in 2013. Levasseur was looking at a maximum sentence for assault of up to 15 years behind bars. Levasseur was charged with a felony, and sentenced to 30 days in jail. Yes, you read it right. Way to go.

While out and on probation, Levasseur assaulted another person, and was charged with a second felony. He was recently sentenced. Levasseur is now going to serve 6-18 months in jail, minus his time served. Too bad someone else had to get hurt.
