Track and field athletes fare well at Essex Invitational

ESSEX — Track and field athletes from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools placed in the top six in individual events at Saturday’s major Essex Invitational, with their efforts highlighted by MUHS junior Hannah Buttolph, who tied for first in the girls’ high jump.

A Commodore boys’ and a Tiger girls’ relay team also posted top finishes in the last meet before this Saturday’s Division II Championship, which Fair Haven Union will host.

VUHS upset highlights high school baseball play

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes Union High School baseball team pulled off an upset in the Division II playoffs on Tuesday, but the season came to an end for the Mount Abraham and Otter Valley squads in first-round D-II games on the road. Middlebury had already failed to qualify for the D-I postseason.

COMMODORES

The No. 14 Commodores edged host No. 3 Milton, 4-3, in their first-round game, winning a playoff game just a year after the school lacked the numbers to field a varsity team.

Tiger boys' lax gets No. 1 seed; VUHS ousted

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury Union High School boys earned the top seed in Division I to highlight local lacrosse news earlier this week. They were set to host a quarterfinal later this week, while the Tiger girls won a first-round game.

As the playoffs got under way on Tuesday, the Vergennes boys lost an opening-round Division II game on the road.

Also in D-II, on Wednesday afternoon the No. 9 Mount Abraham boys (8-8) upset  No. 8 U-32 (8-8), but the No. 16 Otter Valley boys (1-15) fell  No. 1 Rice.

Karl Lindholm: 'Play Balle!' au Montreal; will Major League Baseball return?

They’re talking about bringing Major League baseball back to Montreal. How great would that be!

“They” are Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, big boys who can make things happen, or at least get things started.

It’s a long way off, no doubt, until expansion or relocation brings an MLB team to La Metropole. Manfred has said that the “big thing” for Montreal is to have an “adequate facility to support baseball over the long haul.”

MUHS softball advances; VUHS, OV out

ADDISON COUNTY — In first-round Division II softball playoff action on Tuesday, Middlebury advanced with a home win, but Vergennes and Otter Valley lost on the road.

Mount Abraham also played on Tuesday; see story.

TIGERS

The No. 5 Tigers blanked visiting No. 12 Woodstock, 6-0, as pitcher Payton Buxton tossed a one-hit shutout, her third in the past five games, striking out 12 and walking two. A two-out hit in the seventh spoiled her no-hit bid. She has allowed just two runs in her past five starts.

Legion summer baseball tryouts on tap

MIDDLEBURY — Tryouts for this summer’s Addison County American Legion baseball team have been scheduled for Sunday, June 14, and Monday, June 15.

Both sessions will be held at the Middlebury College baseball field on South Street, near Porter Hospital.

The Sunday tryout will begin at 9 a.m., and Monday’s will start at 5 p.m.

Addison farm wins a conservation grant

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB) last week announced grants totaling $3,083,910 to protect 2,127 acres of agricultural land on 14 farms and a sugarbush and to conserve 641 acres of wooded and open land on three properties with recreational trails in the towns of Williston, Lyndon and West Windsor.

The grants were made to the Vermont Land Trust, the Lake Champlain Land Trust, Kingdom Trails and The Trust for Public Lands. The funding commitments were made at the Board’s May meeting.
