Antiques co-op opening in Bristol

BRISTOL — For Bristol’s 250th Fourth of July, the town will get a fitting addition: an antique cooperative called Antiques at 27 Main, located at 27 Main St.

And who better to spearhead this cooperative than Bristol residents and seasoned antique dealers Clarisse Shechter and Terry Thomas?

Thomas, a Bristol native whose family has run businesses out of 27 Main St. for much of the past half-century, grew a love for antiques as a little boy. He still remembers the day it all began.

Troopers increasing Panton patrols after flood of reports

PANTON — Vermont State Police plan extra patrols on Panton roads near Lake Champlain after a rash of suspicious incidents in June has left area residents on edge.

VSP troopers Andrew Leise and Keri Starr also sat down with homeowners on June 25 to hear their concerns and make recommendations about how they could protect themselves and their properties.

Community rallies after dad dies

ADDISON COUNTY — When Starksboro’s Jonah Rule proposed to his wife Caitlin, it was no surprise to his mother Ann.

Rule’s mother still recalls the first time she saw her daughter-in-law. At that time, Caitlin Rule was a 15-year-old Middlebury Union High School student.

Local option tax receipts continue to grow

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s local option tax continues to exceed revenue expectations, leaving town officials confident the 1-percent levy on rooms, meals, sales and alcohol will generate more than adequate dollars to pay down the community’s share of the new Cross Street Bridge.

Middlebury Community House gains $200K boost in land sale

MIDDLEBURY — The 196-year-old Middlebury Community House — which is maintained on behalf of local residents by a longstanding trust — is entering a new era with a smaller property footprint, more financial stability and a plan to better showcase itself to Addison County — thanks in part to the ongoing Middlebury Fire Department project.

Built in 1816 beside the Congregational Church of Middlebury at the head of Main Street, the Middlebury Community House remains one of the best examples of post-colonial, Federal-style architecture left in town.

AC nips Burlington, remains unbeaten

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County American Legion baseball team got combined one-hit pitching from Sawyer Kamman and Charlie Stapleford on Thursday to defeat visiting Burlington, 2-1, and remain unbeaten at 5-0, 2-0 in Northern Division games, heading into weekend play.

AC was set to play a Sunday doubleheader at league rival Orleans-Essex-Caledonia, with Coach Mike Estey ready to send out some combination of aces Tommy Nelson, Devin Hayes and Stapleford to the mound.

Bristol chase ends in crash

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police arrested a Leicester man Thursday night on multiple charges after he allegedly stole a car in Bristol and led police on a chase along Route 17 before crashing the vehicle into a utility pole.

It was at around 10:12 p.m. last night that police received a call from Bristol resident Christopher Dion stating his car had been stolen from his garage and was last seen traveling west on Route 17 toward Bristol village.

Crowds mark Monkton's 250th birthday with food, fun and laughter

MONKTON — The Monkton 250th Founding Celebration on June 24 was a day of fun, food and laughter. Starting the day of celebration was the 5K Race with 70 runners and walkers. Prizes were given for the fastest time of male and female contestants, the winners being Chris Coffey with a time of 18:35 minutes and Lizzie Collins with a time of 21:35 minutes. The race was sponsored by Road ID. Each contestant received a water bottle. Awards were given at the end of the race on the ball field at Morse Park.
