Winter swimmers post personal bests, victories

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Middlebury Aquatic Club swimmers competed in the Winter Classic Team Specialty Meet on Dec. 4-6, 2015 at the Upper Valley Aquatic Club in White River Junction. Many of the team’s swimmers posted best times, with Thomas Denton placing first in two events.

Results for all the MAC swimmers follow.

8 & Under, 25 Free: 19. Kaitlin Sulik-Doty, 25.16.

Women's hockey earns win

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team picked up a win and a tie at home vs. NESCAC rival Connecticut this past weekend. The Panthers are 4-1-1, 3-0-1 in the league, and were ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III entering last week.

On Friday, the Panthers earned a 3-2 win over the Camels (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC), with help from two power-play goals in six attempts and three successful penalty kills in as many tries.

Men's hockey gets three points on the road

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team got late goals in two recent NESCAC road games to earn a win and a tie to remain unbeaten in league play at 2-0-2. The Panthers, 2-2-2 overall, conclude first semester play with games at Hamilton and Amherst this weekend.

On Saturday, the Panthers scored three goals in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat host Tufts, 3-2. The Jumbos fell to 1-4-2, 0-3-1 in league play. Cameron Romoff scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers with 1:07 remaining.

Women's hoops dealt first setback

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Host Skidmore on Saturday dealt the Middlebury College women’s basketball team its first loss of the season, 63-60. The Thoroughbreds (5-3) took advantage of 28 Panther turnovers, converting them into 32 points.

Middlebury (3-1) returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Plattsburgh State in the team’s home opener at 2 p.m. That contest will also close first-semester action for the Panthers.

MAHA skating lessons offered

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association, known as MAHA, has announced Session 2 of its “Learn to Skate: An Initiation to Hockey” class. This six week program introduces skating and hockey skills (with emphasis on skating) to children ages approximately 4 to 7.

The fee is $80, and sessions are held at Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury. The program begins Saturday, Jan. 2, and ends Feb. 16; class times are 3:45-4:45 p.m. Skates and protective gear are required (helmet, knee and elbow pads, gloves).

Vermont State Police Log: Two separate incidents close Route 7 twice

ADDISON COUNTY — A very bad two-car crash in Ferrisburgh on Monday afternoon sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries and resulted in the closure of Route 7 for more than two and a half hours.

That followed a rollover crash on Route 125 in Ripton earlier in the day, and another two-car crash last week on Route 7 a couple miles north of the Dec. 7 crash.

Vergennes Police Log: Police keep close eye on commercial trucks

VERGENNES — In an otherwise mostly quiet week between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6, Vergennes police dealt with a couple of cases of truck traffic enforcement and also participated with other area law enforcement agencies on a two-day, grant-funded detail that also focused on commercial truck traffic.
