SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ lacrosse team finished its season at .500 (9-9) after falling to No. 1 Rice in a Saturday Division II quarterfinal, but not before winning a first-round game on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the Eagles won a rubber match with No. 8 U-32, 11-8. The teams had split two competitive regular season games. Lucas Richter led the charge with five goals, and goalie Tucker Paradee backstopped the win with 10 saves and picked up an assist.
MIDDLEBURY — The No. 1 Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team cruised past No. 8 Woodstock, 13-5, on Friday and now must get down to business.
MUHS, No. 2 South Burlington (13-3), No. 4 Essex (11-5, including two out-of-state losses) and defending champ No. 6 Champlain Valley (11-6, including two out-of-state losses) are the final four.
MILTON — Host No. 4 Milton on Friday edged No. 5 Middlebury Union High School, 3-1, in a Division II softball quarterfinal.
The loss to the 11-6 Yellowjackets snapped the Tigers’ five-game winning streak, one that moved them up in the D-II standings and allowed them to host and win a first-round playoff game. It was also the 9-7 Tigers’ fifth loss by three runs or fewer this spring, including three extra-inning setbacks. One of those came earlier at Milton, 9-8, in eight innings.
ORLEANS — Host No. 4 Lake Region Union High School on Saturday fended off an upset bid from No. 14 Vergennes, 4-3, in a Division II baseball quarterfinal.
The 12-5 Rangers mounted a four-run rally off losing pitcher Hunter O’Connor in the fourth inning and then hung on as the Commodores rallied. O’Connor took the loss despite striking out a dozen batters.
SPRINGFIELD — Host No. 3 Springfield eliminated the No. 6 Mount Abraham Union High School softball team from the Division II playoffs in a Friday quarterfinal, 7-2.
The setback was just the second in seven games for the Eagles, who had surged at the end of the regular season to earn, and then win, a first-round home playoff game. They finished at 10-8.
KILLINGTON — The Otter Valley Union High School golf team this past Thursday finished sixth in Division II at the Green Mountain National Golf Club at Killington.
OV carded a collective 427, just behind fellow Southern Vermont teams Mill River (411) and Woodstock (417).
The three Northern teams dominated the event, with Lyndon (325) posting a 23-stroke win over Rice (348) to win the title, followed by Harwood (393).
EAST MONTPELIER — Athletes from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes won events at Saturday’s Division II championship meet at U-32 High School in East Montpelier.
MUHS junior Hannah Buttolph repeated as the girls’ high jump champion, clearing five feet, two inches to win by six inches. That height would have won the D-I meet by four inches.
Mount Abe freshman Lydia Pitts continued her dominance in girls’ D-II hurdling, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.46 and the 300 in 49.84.
