Editorial: Disney, Bloomberg are ahead of the times on era's health issue

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If you’ve been reading the news this week, you’d know the connection between the Walt Disney Company recent action and one proposed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The former will banish junk-food advertising from its television shows for kids, and the latter is considering a plan to ban oversized sugary drinks. Both are addressing the obesity epidemic that is sweeping the nation.

And with good cause.

Clippings: Darn that government. Or not...

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

A few years back at an Addison forum devoted to whether the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union should unite under one-board governance, a resident asked rhetorically whether bigger government ever made things better.

Never mind school unification: Given more recent history, that question now looks a little ironic.

After all, the town of Addison and local residents and businesses just happily spent money to celebrate the opening of the new $70 million bridge across Lake Champlain.

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Eric L. Davis

The aging of Vermont’s population is a well-known finding from the 2010 U.S. Census. Vermont has the second-oldest population of any state, behind only Maine. If current trends continue, Vermont could well be the oldest state in the nation by 2020.

Between the Lines: In springtime love's labors lost

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Greg Dennis

It was one of the hardest phone calls I’d ever had to make.

We’d been seeing each other since last fall. Now it had finally become clear that things just weren’t going to work out.

Even when you know you’ve got to end it, though, it’s always hard to tell the other party.

Our relationship had seemed so right at first.

Authorities are again warning people not to share their private financial information with others promising something too good to be true.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

Editorial: Reagan and Dole had answers to pension/entitlement reform

Posted on June 4, 2012 |
By Emerson Lynn Jr.

Any conversation about Social Security reform must begin with hard facts: On the current track, U.S. federal income will be insufficient in 2025 — a mere 13 years from now — to pay for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security and interest on the debt.

All other spending — for defense, medical research, highways, education, energy, you name it — would have to be paid for with borrowed money. Conclusion: federal revenues must rise and spending on these major entitlements must fall.
