BANGOR, Maine — A grand jury in Bangor, Maine, last week indicted Jeffrey Parfitt, 26, of Middlebury, Vt., on one count of class B felony unlawful sexual contact.
MIDDLEBURY — Forth ’N Goal co-owner Dan McIntosh was talking about how much he enjoys 6 a.m. two-mile swims in Lake Dunmore along with other members of the Middlebury Muffintops swimming club.
It was so beautiful out there this past Wednesday, Dan said, he wanted to get his father and fellow Muffintop, Don McIntosh, to take a break and watch the mist drifting across the water.
“We were out there and the lake was like glass, and it was gorgeous,” said Dan, 48. “I stopped halfway just to look at the scenery.”
There’s a classic scene near the end of “The Big Lebowski” — the best bowling movie ever — where The Dude (Jeff Bridges) and Walter (John Goodman) stand on an ocean cliff. They’ve clambered out there to spread the cremated ashes of Donnie, their recently deceased friend and bowling partner.
But it’s windy out there. When Walter releases Donnie’s remains after a hilariously inappropriate soliloquy, the breeze blasts the ashes directly onto The Dude’s face — where they stick into a pasty mask.
We might be all mourning another Newtown-style gun tragedy, this one near Atlanta, if it weren’t for the bravery and calm of a school clerk named Antoinette Tuff. She had just sat down at a desk, taking the place of another secretary at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, when 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill entered the school. Dressed in black and armed to the teeth, the would-be gunman appeared extremely agitated and ready to inflict harm.

White-tailed deer hunting is an integral part of Vermont’s heritage. The Vermont Constitution has guaranteed the right to hunt and fish since 1777, nearly 200 years before other states adopted similar provision. There’s even a white-tailed deer on the state flag.
