Residents tell Vermont Gas to slow down on pipeline push

Posted on April 4, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas Systems officials on Monday asked for public feedback on their proposed “Phase II” pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper Co. mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y.

What those officials heard, from a crowd of around 70 people who attended the informational meeting at Middlebury’s municipal gym, could be distilled into two words: “Slow down.”

Cost to fix Middlebury town gym higher than expected

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectboard members got somewhat of a jolt at their meeting last Tuesday when they received an estimate that it would cost $525,000 to bring the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of the municipal gym up to modern working standards, an amount that is just $50,000 short of the $575,000 sum that officials had hoped would suffice in making the well-used building completely up to speed.

LEICESTER — Residents here will return to the polls on Tuesday, April 9, to vote on a revised spending plan for the Leicester School District.

The school board is proposing a revised budget of $1,117,640 for fiscal year 2013-14. That represents a spending increase of $56,982, or 5.4 percent, over the $1,060,658 budgeted for the current year.

The board’s first offering was rejected by voters on Town Meeting Day by eight votes, 73-65. That $1,127,521 spending plan would have raised the budget by $66,863, or 6.3 percent.

BRIDPORT — Lawmakers and several dozen Addison County citizens gathered at the Bridport Community Hall for a legislative lunch on agricultural issues, but the hot-button issues discussed over the meal were not directly related to agriculture.

Rather, citizens in attendance wanted to pick legislators’ brains over a controversial shoreline conservation bill, H.526, which netted statewide attention after clearing the House late last week, and over a tax package that would lift the tax exemption on items including bottled water, soda, candy and dietary supplements.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday reached a marketing agreement with Burlington commercial brokerage firm Redstone for the town-owned 34.9-acre parcel at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A.

Redstone will the market the land for one year for $375,000, the same asking price for which Pomerleau Real Estate had tried to sell the property since September 2010 until last year.

Pomerleau attracted one purchaser for that price, but the deal fell through when the buyer could not meet contingencies after the selectboard granted extensions.
