UD-3 school board split on cuts for MUMS

MIDDLEBURY —  UD-3 school directors will meet on Dec. 18 in hopes of finalizing a 2014-2015 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that currently reflects a 2.8-percent spending increase as well as 3.2 fewer educator positions at MUMS.

Ferrisburgh opts for a part-time treasurer

FERRISBURGH — At a meeting last week with Town Clerk and Treasurer Chet Hawkins and town auditors, the Ferrisburgh selectboard changed course and agreed with Hawkins’ recommendation to advertise for a part-time assistant treasurer.

In November the selectboard had advertised for a full-time treasurer, but at an occasionally tense Nov. 19 meeting Hawkins said he would not step down from his post to allow the selectboard to hire a treasurer because he believed it would be better for him to hire someone for the job.

Bristol police praise new headquarters

BRISTOL — The village police department has settled into a new space that officers say is more suitable for a modern police force.

The new, 2,200-square-foot headquarters for the Bristol Police Department, which has three full-time officers and five part-timers who work on an as-needed basis, is located at 72 Munsill Ave. in the Bristol Works.

Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said the difference between the new facility and the old department, which was located in the basement of Holley Hall, is “night and day.”

Ferrisburgh moves voting to its former Grange Hall

Changes planned for downtown Bristol intersection

BRISTOL — The crossroad at the heart of Bristol village, where West, South, North and Main streets meet, will undergo improvements next year to make the intersection safer for motorists and pedestrians.

Derrick Lyman of the Vermont Agency of Transportation, Gregory Edwards of Stantec Design, Carol Wells of the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership and Claire Tebbs of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission presented information on the changes at the Bristol selectboard meeting Dec. 2.

Addison planners and selectmen talk zoning

ADDISON — Members of the Addison selectboard will sit down with the Addison Planning Commission on Dec. 16 to discuss the changes the selectboard proposed in November to the planners’ long-awaited update to the town’s zoning laws.

Those changes, made during a Nov. 5 work session, include calling for smaller lots and a reduction in frontage setback requirements in Addison’s Low Density Residential Agricultural (LDRA) zone, the town’s largest.
