By John S. McCright

Editor’s note: This is the first of a two-part series on the increase of burglaries in Addison County. The second part will focus on the state police’s new crime fighting tool.

ADDISON COUNTY — A Weybridge homeowner left her residence for an hour and locked every door in the house. She’d heard about area break-ins and her family was taking precautions.

“We were really locking our doors for the first time after 25 years in Vermont,” she recalled.

“We got hit anyway.”

Hunters in Vt. had a productive 2012 season

Successful hunting table.jpg

VERMONT — It was a good year to be a big game hunter in Vermont in 2012, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department reports. In particular, populations of wild turkeys and black bears are at very high levels, offering hunters of those species excellent opportunities. The whitetail harvest also saw several positive trends in 2012, with the totals for all hunting seasons within the statewide management goals. Perhaps of greater note, 2012 marked the first year in which there were no hunting-related shooting incidents in Vermont.

The reassessment by Vermont Gas Systems to change its proposed route through Monkton back to the Velco right-of-way instead of along public roads through a short stretch, was welcome news to many Monkton residents — though others are still peeved that the pipeline is headed through town without any apparent benefit to that community.

Editorial: Double whammy for Vergennes?

Posted on January 31, 2013 |
By Angelo Lynn

Vergennes residents are eyeing a double-whammy if a city bond to build a new $1.85 million police station is approved as well as two separate bonds for improvements to the Vergennes Union High School that could total $6.2 million. The school bonds will be voted on this coming Tuesday, while a vote to approve the police station bond would be held on Town Meeting Day.

That the bonds land in the taxpayers’ laps at virtually the same time is bad enough, but there are also elements to both the city’s and school’s projects that are less than critical.
