New spot eyed for proposed Middlebury rec center

MIDDLEBURY — An ad hoc committee charged with planning a new Middlebury municipal building and recreation center will explore the possibility of siting the rec. center on school-owned property off Creek Road, instead of on the town recreation fields off Mary Hogan Drive.

New entity to take charge at Northlands Job Corps

VERGENNES — About 20 months ago the U.S. Department of Labor announced that a new contractor would take over operation of the Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes at the end of December 2012, in the wake of a student beating scandal at the federal job-training center. On Dec. 1 CHP International Inc. will take the reins at the MacDonough Drive campus from the current contractor, Alutiiq LLC.

Vermont Republican Party looks to Sunderland to right the ship

WATERBURY — The Vermont Republican Party is somewhat of an endangered species these days.

Republicans hold just 48 of 150 seats in the Vermont House of Representatives, seven of 30 seats in the Senate, and one of six statewide offices.

In 2012, Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, defeated GOP challenger Randy Brock by 21 points. Brock, a former state senator, outspent Shumlin but managed to secure the vote of just one-third of Vermonters.

Local state police barracks gets a new chief

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police Lt. Michael Manley has been appointed the new commander of the VSP’s Addison County barracks in New Haven. Manley, 35, succeeds Lt. Gary Genova, who retired last month after having served two-and-a-half years as leader of the state police’s force in the county.

Manley, a native of the Utica, N.Y., area, joined the VSP in 2000, soon after graduating from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa.

Exchange student from Spain shoots deer on first hunt

NEW HAVEN — There is a special kind of excitement in a young Vermonter’s voice when he or she tells you about the first time they bagged a deer. One 15-year-old who shot his first deer this past Saturday during Vermont Youth Hunting Weekend had a unique twist — he is an exchange student from Spain visiting Vermont for a year.

Panther women's soccer named NCAA host

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team will make its eighth NCAA Division III tournament appearance this weekend when the Panthers host an NCAA regional for the second consecutive season.

The 13-1-3 Panthers, ranked No. 13 in last week’s poll, will take on Bridgewater State on Saturday at 11 a.m., and Scranton will meet Endicott at 1:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the regional final on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Panther football earns share of title

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Middlebury College football team thumped host Tufts on Saturday, 52-10, and by doing so earned a share of the NESCAC championship.

The Panthers finished in a three-way tie with Amherst and Wesleyan for the title, all with 7-1 records. Amherst defeated Williams on Saturday, while Wesleyan’s chances for an outright championship fell by the wayside with a one-sided loss at Trinity.
