ADDISON COUNTY — Although the results for the area high school girls’ soccer teams varied this fall and none brought home banners, all four programs benefitted from outstanding individual efforts that are recognized here in the 2013 Addison Independent Girls’ Soccer All-Star Team.
WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team opened its season with a pair of wins at NESCAC rival Colby this past Saturday and Sunday, 2-1 and 4-0.
The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, will open at home this weekend vs. league foe Trinity, with games at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
In Saturday’s 2-1 win the Panthers held a 42-22 shots advantage, but Colby goaltender Brianne Wheeler made 40 saves.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened its season this past weekend with a tie and a win at home vs. two NESCAC rivals. The Panthers will return to action this coming weekend at Tufts and Connecticut.
The tie came on Saturday night vs. preseason league favorite Bowdoin, which was ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Division III coaches’ poll. The final was 2-2 in what was also the opener for the Polar Bears, who were outshot by the Panthers, 36-24, 6-1 in overtime.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team made it three straight wins to open the season by topping visiting Green Mountain College on Tuesday, 94-53. They were ranked No. 18 in the opening NCAA Division III poll and return to action in a tournament at Stevenson College this weekend.

On Sunday, the Indomitable Lions, Cameroon’s national football team, defeated Tunisia 4-1 in a knockout game at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, here in Yaounde. So Cameroon will be going to the Really Big Dance in Brazil next June, la Coupe du Monde.
They were dancing in the streets in Yaounde. The World Cup is a very big deal here, and just about everywhere else in the world too.
ADDISON COUNTY — Younger hunters in the area did not have quite as much success on the Nov. 9-10 Youth Hunting Weekend as they had in the past two Novembers, but the 109 deer they had weighed at seven reporting stations in Addison County was very respectable compared to results over the past five years.
The 109 deer this Youth Hunting Weekend is down slightly from the 124 tagged over the same weekend in 2012, and one less than the number in 2011. In both 2009 and 2010 the final tally stood at 95,
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police reported that Molly Kalter, 22, of Groton, Mass., was driving a 2003 Honda Accord northbound on Route 30 in Cornwall a little before 4 p.m. on Sunday when the car entered a sharp right curve. There was light rain and the road was wet.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed that someone had left threatening voice mail messages on the answering machine at the local office of the Vermont Department of Children and Families on Nov. 12. Police said the person also made threats against the Vermont State Police. The investigation continues.
