Whiskey distillery proposal ready for Act 250 scrutiny

SHOREHAM — The District 9 Environmental Commission will likely not request a second hearing to receive more testimony in WhistlePig’s quest for an Act 250 permit to build a whiskey distillery, its leader says. So the panel will now revisit the mountain of evidence that has been submitted by the applicant and opponents of the high-profile project in anticipation of issuing a decision later this spring.

Brandon to revote municipal budget

BRANDON — There will be a re-vote on Brandon’s municipal budget next month.

Organizers turned in petitions containing more than the required 564 signatures to Brandon Town Clerk Bill Dick on Monday, which amounts to at least 20 percent of the electorate as required by state statute.

On Monday night, the selectboard approved a motion to warn a re-vote election for Tuesday, April 30, pending availability of the Neshobe School polling place.

Middlebury lands $250,000 sidewalk grant

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury has landed a $250,000 federal grant to install a 1,560-foot stretch of sidewalk along the west side of Creek Road, a project that will be done in concert with major repairs to the road.

Former Weybridge town clerk pleads guilty in $485,000 embezzlement

WEYBRIDGE — Former Weybridge Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson appeared in U.S. District Court in Rutland on Monday and pleaded guilty to a charge of federal program embezzlement. Town officials said an audit had determined that she had embezzled $485,000 in town funds since 2006.

Brisson, 50, agreed to pay restitution to the town.

House panel considering GMO labeling bill

MIDDLEBURY — While lawmakers spent much time at a legislative breakfast at the American Legion hall in Middlebury on Monday talking about taxes, they also discussed important legislation for the farm community, among other things.

At the top of the list was a bill that would require the labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs.

Brandon's Coburn crowned Mrs. Vermont

BRANDON — Brandon native Stacey S. Coburn was recently crowned Mrs. Vermont United States 2013. Coburn will represent married women across Vermont as she competes for the national title of Mrs. United States in Las Vegas in July.

Some household products emit chemicals into the air

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature. Commonly found in many household products including carpets, cleaning products and adhesives, they emit potentially harmful levels of chemicals into the air for many months after application.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, research has shown that high or prolonged exposure to VOCs can yield adverse effects, including eye and throat irritation, headaches, asthma, liver damage, complications to the central nervous system and cancer.

Panther men's basketball ends its NCAA run in quarterfinal

SALEM, Va. — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team fell, 67-55, to North Central (Ill.) in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division tournament on March 22, ending the program’s second-deepest advance into the postseason.

Middlebury made it to the Final Four in Salem two years, ago, but the 12-point quarterfinal loss marked Middlebury’s largest margin of defeat since the Panthers were ousted from the 2010 tournament by Rhode Island College, 75-59.
