ADDISON COUNTY — This year’s United Way of Addison County Community Celebration event will be held on Thursday, May 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Vergennes Opera House. The main focus of this free, family-friendly event is to honor and thank those people who help their friends and neighbors achieve better lives by working with the United Way to make its campaign a success.
BRISTOL — Holiday weekends often seem to come and go too quickly, but those in the Bristol area can look forward to two celebratory weekends in a row.
This year, the fifth annual “Pocock Rocks!” music festival and street fair will be held on Saturday, June 1, the weekend after Memorial Day, on Main Street in Bristol.
“Attendance has grown each year,” said Carol Wells, executive director of the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership, which sponsors the event. “We try to tweak it a bit each year to improve even more.”
VERGENNES — U.S. Department of Labor employees who receive one of the 2013 Secretary of Labor’s Honor Awards may have students from the Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes to thank for the award. Job Corps students and instructors from Northlands in Vergennes and from another Job Corps in Utah used recycling and sustainability in creating unique, handcrafted awards honoring the service and dedication of the federal DOL employees.
MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center has restocked its ranks with more than a dozen new primary caregivers to ensure that Addison County patients will once again be able to have their health care needs taken care of locally.
BRISTOL — When the water systems in most towns are experiencing a leak, identifying the problem area can be a simple matter of watching for where the excess water bubbles up to the surface.
But in Bristol, which sits atop a plateau of gravel and has a water system that dates back to 1905, things are rarely that simple.
ADDISON COUNTY — Farmers in the Champlain Valley are forming a coalition to address water pollution in the Lake Champlain Basin. After a year of planning, the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition incorporated earlier this year as a nonprofit organization.
MIDDLEBURY — To honor returning volunteer teachers Loren Mejia and David Hamberlin, Friends of SOLA (School of Leadership, Afghanistan) are sponsoring an Awareness Gathering on Tuesday, May 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at Middlebury’s Ilsley Library.
FERRISBURGH — It’s official: Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s schooner Lois McClure is preparing to embark on her 2013 tour. This year’s thematic and interpretive message is “1813: The Shipwrights’ War, and Other Stories.”
