Last weekend at a girls’ basketball tournament, I found myself in a public restroom with my 12-year-old daughter and some other moms and pre-teens. I washed my hands and waved them under the paper towel dispenser to trigger the sensor.
Frantic jazz-hands wave.
My daughter groaned.
“It’s not that kind, Mom,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Just pull.”
MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Sheriff Jim Coons, who died on Monday evening at the age of 59, was recalled by fellow law enforcement officials as a gregarious, savvy and cooperative public servant who dramatically transformed his department during his three decades in office.
“Jim Coons was the iconic face of law enforcement in Addison County and a bridge between the past and present,” said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley.
“He will be a tough act to follow.”

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Sheriff’s Department announced this morning that Sheriff James B. Coons died Monday night at his home in Middlebury. He succumbed to cancer.
