Hungry mind; full ears

April 12, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — For years, Michele Fay has felt like a musician without a stage. The guitarist and her group — aptly named the Michele Fay Band — have spent several years as real-life troubadours, zigzagging the region to get to their many gigs.

There are some local watering holes that feature live music, along with other distractions, and a few venues that feature music, though not as often as most would like. Fay has always wanted a regular, local place to park her instrument and showcase the music, and she knows other Addison County musicians feel the same way.

“As a Vermont musician, I have … discovered that it’s very hard to find venues — especially places that aren’t crowded bars or noisy restaurants,” she said. “It’s hard to find a good ‘listening room.’”

Mary Hogan budget to face vote

April 9, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters weighing in on the proposed 2007-2008 ID-4 school budget on Wednesday, April 11, will also be asked if they want to affirm their current practice of electing their moderator, clerk, treasurer and an auditor from the floor, as opposed to by Australian ballot.

The special vote, set for 7 p.m. at Mary Hogan Elementary School, comes in the wake of some recent research by Addison Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Lee Sease into the ID-4 charter. He discovered that the charter — which dates back to 1866 — stipulates that district officers must be elected by Australian ballot. But the district had unwittingly been selecting its officers in the same manner as most other districts — from the floor of the annual meeting, a process endorsed by state law.

Trouble is, school charters are supposed to trump state law when it comes to procedural matters.

Steve Flint comes to New Haven post

April 9, 2007

By CYRUS LEVESQUE

NEW HAVEN — A school with 450 students in grades K-8 may not be that big a school by some standards, but it has been too big for Steve Flint. The former Addison Central School teacher took up the position as assistant principal of Manchester Elementary/Middle School in southern Vermont last fall but he has found that he misses the ability to get to know the students and faculty that comes with a smaller school.

“There’s a feel that comes with a small school that’s really important to me,” Flint said.

So when he heard that Beeman Elementary School in New Haven was looking for a principal, he jumped at the chance. Flint, 33, will take over for Carol Barnes, who in January announced her retirement at the end of the school year. The Beeman Elementary School board chose Flint for the job on March 29.

Connor Homes buys Standard Register property

April 9, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Local business leaders were ecstatic with last week’s news that a local manufacturing company, Connor Homes, had submitted the winning bid to acquire and occupy the former Standard Register property on Route 7 South.

Connor Homes, known until recently as Connor Building Co., could occupy the 115,000-square-foot Standard Register building as soon as this summer. The company has long-since outgrown its 14,000-square-foot space off Exchange Street. Connor Homes President Michael Connor said he had considered erecting a building of his own in the Exchange Street area. But his focus shifted when people within the local business community suggested that he take a look at the former Standard Register facility.

“At first we thought it was too big,” Connor said. “But the more we looked at it, the more it made sense.”

Mt. Abe pushes to be carbon-neutral

April 5, 2007

By CYRUS LEVESQUE

BRISTOL — Last year the Mount Abraham Union High School switched to a greener, cheaper mode of warming the building when it installed a wood chip-fired heating system. That idea began with a simple science class project by Jessie-Ruth Corkins and Christi Kroll.

Now, Corkins and three other MAUHS students are shooting for a more ambitious goal: switching much of the state to biofuels.

The four students over the last several months have developed a plan to promote the production of fuel pellets from switchgrass, a hardy prairie grass believed to hold promise for producing ethanol or other biofuels. They would begin with a fuel pellet factory sponsored by both the state and federal governments. The goal is to have half or more of Vermont’s heating energy come from pellets in 10 years.

MVAA wins top award

April 5, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — When the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) takes to the road, it’s usually to respond to a serious accident or medical emergency. The adrenaline is pumping and time is of the essence.

But this past Saturday, March 31, MVAA members finally went on a casual road trip, one in which they — and not their patients — were the center of attention. The occasion was the “2007 Vermont Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Conference and Awards Banquet,” where the MVAA scooped up a whopping three of the seven statewide awards handed out during the evening, including the prestigious “2007 Vermont Ambulance Service of the Year” citation.

“I would say the people of Addison County, and those in particular served by the MVAA, have a great deal to be proud of,” said Dan Manz, EMS director for the Vermont Department of Health, which coordinated the awards presentation at the Sheraton Conference Center in South Burlington.

Where exactly is the Addison town hall?

April 2, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

ADDISON — Details remain a little fuzzy as to why Addison officials built the local town hall on Addison Baptist Church property off the intersection of Routes 17 and 22A more than 130 years ago, but parishioner Erwin Clark has a theory.

“(Townspeople) needed shelter for their horses and buggies,” said Clark, a member of the Addison Baptist Church since the 1930s. “They wanted to use the wagon shed that the church had.”

Cars have since replaced horses and buggies, and Addison shifted its annual meeting from its town hall to its more spacious elementary school around 30 years ago. And while the old town hall building has sat relatively idle, it has not been forgotten. After a discussion at town meeting about what do with the town hall, Addison officials have formed a committee to determine whether the venerable old structure can be resurrected for municipal use.
