In high school boys' hoop: Otters, Tigers claim wins

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball play in the latter half of last week, Middlebury split a pair of close games and Otter Valley picked up a big win, but Vergennes and Mount Abraham each cropped a pair of contests.

TIGERS

On Wednesday, visiting Missisquoi held on for a 57-54 victory over the Tigers despite scoring just 19 points in the second half. Richard Walker scored 30 points for the 11-3 T-Birds, including 17 of their second-half points. Trey Kaufmann scored 19 to lead the Tigers.

Bristol Police Log: Bristol police defuse domestic fight

BRISTOL — On Jan. 28, Bristol police responded at the request of Vermont State Police to an Oak Lane domestic incident involving a firearm. Police calmed the parties and stayed with them until VSP could arrive and begin their investigation.

Between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29, Bristol police conducted four town-contracted traffic patrols, covering Lovers Lane, Monkton Road and Stoney Hill Road. Police issued two tickets and one warning for speeding and one warning for an improperly displayed license plate.

Local police chiefs contest racial bias report

ADDISON COUNTY — Police officials in Addison County said a newly released report alleging the presence of racially biased policing in Vermont provides an inaccurate and unfair portrayal of their respective departments, and is based on traffic-stop data that has been skewed to arrive at a conclusion.

The report, titled “Driving While Black and Brown in Vermont,” was authored by Prof. Stephanie Seguino of the University of Vermont Economic Department, and Nancy Brooks, a visiting associate professor at Cornell University.

Trump order strands Weybridge family in Iran: Middlebury College helping professor get home

WEYBRIDGE and TABRIZ, Iran — Close to 6,000 miles away in the northwestern corner of Iran, a Weybridge family is hastily packing.

“We are planning to fly back to the U.S. on Friday and, as you can imagine, it is mayhem here in our house with packing and stuff. We’ll hopefully be in Vermont on Saturday if everything goes smoothly,” wrote Middlebury College professor Ata Anzali in an email to the Independent on Tuesday.

Bristol couple mixes love of food into handmade ice cream and chocolates

BRISTOL — Sixteen years old is pretty young to be making life decisions, but not for Erlé LaBounty; that’s when he decided to become a chocolatier. He began crafting his first truffles in his grandfather’s farmhouse in Randolph and has been refining them for the past 19 years.
