Greg Dennis: Diagnosing a case of summer fever

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Gregory Dennis

Case Number: 12345

Patient: G. Dennis

Age: 61, going on 10

Primary symptoms: Smiles far too often. Breathes deeply of the June breeze. Prone to random, pointless walks outdoors. Delusions about the length of the current season.

Dear Dr. Freud:

I write to refer to you a patient, a Mr. G. Dennis, whose ailments are too serious for me to deal with as a psychotherapist. I trust him to your care in hopes your methods can help this poor soul.

Eric Davis: Media must hold Shumlin accountable

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Eric Davis

Gov. Peter Shumlin is unlikely to face vigorous opposition when campaigning for a third term this fall. The Progressives decided not to nominate a gubernatorial candidate. The Republicans could not find a mainstream candidate until right at the filing deadline, when Scott Milne announced he would enter the race.

The Republicans were unable to find candidates for many offices. The GOP recruited candidates for only two of the six statewide offices, 15 of the 30 Senate seats, and 79 of the 150 House seats.

Opinion: Phase 2 Too High a Constitutional Price

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Christopher Bray

Addison County is currently the scene of a controversial three-part drama.

Vermont Gas Systems/Gaz Métro (VGS/GM) has proposed the Addison Natural Gas Project (ANGP): Phase 1 will bring gas to Middlebury, and it has already received a Certificate of Public Good (CPG); Phase 2 is the subject of an application now before the Public Service Board (PSB); and Phase 3 is in the concept stage, and may someday bring gas from Middlebury to Rutland.

Opinion: State showing wrong priorities

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Paul Stone

It seems devastatingly sad that Vermont is planning to spend $8 million defending the right to require labels of foods containing GMOs — that is, genetically modified organisms — that have caused no health problems and certainly no deaths, while the Vermont Department for Children and Families needs serious reorganization and rehabilitation so as to prevent abuse and deaths of innocent children under its supervision.

Community Forum: Legislature ignored key issues this session

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Heidi Scheurmann

This week’s writer is Rep. Heidi E. Scheuermann, who is in her fourth term in the Vermont House.

There have been many opinions about how successful the 2013-2014 legislative session was.

Just prior to adjournment, Gov. Peter Shumlin told the House of Representatives “we have made this biennium one of the most productive in recent memory.” In other press reports, House Speaker Shap Smith called the last session “incredibly productive.”

Opinion: Politician claims unfair criticism

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By Heidi Scheurmann

Editor’s note: The writer submitted this letter at the beginning of the month but due to an error at the paper publication was delayed until now.

I was surprised at the vitriolic attack on me in the May 26 edition of your newspaper.

Opinion: Let's use our common sense and oppose the pipeline

Posted on June 25, 2014 |
By John Madden

Concerning the Canadian Gaz Métro (VGS) proposed 12-inch, high-pressure (600 psi) gas transmission pipeline through Addison County:

Vermont law (30 V.S.A., Section 248(b)(5)) and common sense say that proposals that would be a threat to public health and safety are not in the public good.

Google “explosions of natural gas transmission pipelines” for pictures and record of that potential harm to Vermont and Vermonters.
