Around the bend: Warily shifting into spring mode

Back in December, when the weather failed to live up to standard expectations for a Vermont winter — that is, cold, dark, snowy and generally miserable — no one panicked. “There’s still a lot of winter left,” everyone said, in a tone of optimism or, at least in my case, dread for what the next three months might hold.

And when January similarly broke tradition by depriving us of the usual treacherous weather and its associated crankiness, that was OK too, because we still had February and March to look forward to/endure.

Clippings: What did you eat for Town Meeting?

The Chinese view of a country is drastically different from America’s, but it has a lot in common with Vermont towns.

In Chinese, the word for “country” is pronounced guojia. Literally translated back into English guojia means “land family.” This idea — that a country is a family of people that support each other — is deeply ingrained in the Chinese psyche.

Vergennes Police Log: Police seek information of man who made threat

VERGENNES — Acting on behalf of Vergennes police, Burlington police on March 2 arrested a 51-year-old Vergennes resident for aggravated domestic assault and added two other charges following a March 1 incident at a Main Street, Vergennes, apartment.

Middlebury Police Log: Sculpture missing from the Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed of the theft of a sculpture from the Ilsley Public Library on Feb. 29. Police said the sculpture was valued at $1,200.

Ilsley officials have offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of the green slate tile carved with an image of a mother and child. Those with information should call the police at 388=3191 or David Clark at Ilsley library at 388-4095.

Vermont State Police Log: City Man draws charges in domestic incident

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are on the lookout for a onetime Middlebury man for allegedly issuing threats.

On Feb. 17 received a report that Kevin Desjardin, 26, was allegedly threatening via Facebook to kill a local woman’s horses and dogs and harm her with a firearm. Police said the messages stem from the woman having knowledge of an incident that took place in Ripton in November of 2011.

It’s always one of the busiest and most enjoyable weeks of the year, when high school and college sports playoffs coincide with Town Meeting Day, where, as always, things were pretty lively this year. At least I didn’t have to write about school unification.

Women's hockey earns NCAA berth

MIDDLEBURY — Courtesy of Sunday’s dramatic 1-0 win over Amherst in the NESCAC playoff final, the Middlebury College women’s hockey team earned a home NCAA Division III quarterfinal.

The 21-3-3 Panthers, who will be seeking their first NCAA title since winning three straight from 2004 to 2006, will host a familiar foe, 18-6-3 Plattsburgh. Middlebury defeated the Cardinals in November, 4-1, but on Feb. 18 were fortunate to earn a 4-4 tie at home on Sara Ugalde’s last-minute goal.

Vergennes incumbents ousted

VERGENNES — Two multi-term incumbents lost re-election bids in Tuesday’s six-way race for three seats on the Vergennes city council, while two familiar faces seeking elective office in Vergennes for the first time earned the most votes.

Real estate appraiser and Vergennes Partnership President Bill Benton polled 350 votes to lead the field, followed by former city manager Renny Perry with 313.
