MIDDLEBURY — Six members of the Congregational Church of Middlebury headed to Joplin, Mo., May 4-11 for the church’s fourth annual service trip: Patty Hallam, leader Dave Hallam, Mary Lou Webster, Rich Carpenter, Phil Heitkamp and Peter Carothers.

Vergennes Champs swim past Middlebury Panthers in dual swim meet

VERGENNES — The host Vergennes Champs swim team used its depth to overcome the Middlebury Panthers on Thursday, 267-212, in Champlain Valley Swim League action. The result left both teams with 1-1 records.

The Champs won 10 of 14 relays, none of which were contested, to rack up a 98-28 advantage in those events, enough to overcome the Panthers’ slight edge in individual races at the Vergennes city pool.

Public reviews Mount Abe building repair needs

BRISTOL — Dozens of parents and community members in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union attended an open house Wednesday evening at Mount Abraham Union High School to discuss renovating the building.

The open house, hosted by a committee charged by the school board to develop ideas for what the renovated school should look like, provided ANeSU residents with the opportunity to brainstorm together, as well as question the architect hired by the school board.

Middlebury area ambulance service seeks funding from towns

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Regional EMS has decided to resurrect its practice of asking for Town Meeting Day contributions from the 10 towns it serves, money the organization will place in a fund for future capital needs.

Middlebury Regional EMS — once known as the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association — began requesting Town Meeting Day contributions in 1998. The organization used those funds — an average of $25,319 per year — to help solidify its operating budget.

MALT to raise $490,000 to conserve Weybridge land

WEYBRIDGE — The Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) is trying to raise $490,000 to buy and permanently conserve a strategic, 101-acre parcel of Middlebury College-owned land located north of Route 23 in Weybridge, property that would be maintained as an important wildlife habitat as well as for farming.

10 area players win baseball accolades

ADDISON COUNTY — Nine members of the Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Otter Valley union high school baseball teams and one county resident playing for Rice Memorial earned postseason recognition from their leagues.

Ferrisburgh’s Tim Shea was named a first-team Metro Conference second baseman. Shea, a former Vergennes player, helped Rice win the Division I title.

Two Otter Valley seniors earned Marble Valley League B Division all-star status, outfielder Shane Quenneville and second baseman/pitcher Will Claessens.

Local lacrosse players honored

ADDISON COUNTY — Three members of the Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team and one member of the Mount Abraham squad earned postseason honors from the Vermont Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Tiger senior defender Sam Smith was named an All-American as well as a Division I first-team all-state player, while the VLCA named Tiger senior attacker Sam Usilton as a “Green and Gold Outstanding Player of the Year” as well as a second-team D-I all-state player.
